King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, stood in the center of the array amid huge maddened elephants moving like mountains. Magnanimous and valiant Yajnasena, king of the Panchalas, followed with his akshauhini behind Virata for the sake of the Pandavas. On the chariots of the heroes stood great banners, shining like the sun and moon, adorned with the finest gold and bearing various emblems, O king. Then the great warrior Dhrishtadyumna advanced from behind and, together with his brothers and sons, guarded Yudhishthira. But Arjuna's single banner, bearing the great kapi, surpassed all the varied standards on the chariots of your warriors and their foes alike.

The Pandava center holds around Yudhishthira, whose protection is entrusted to Dhrishtadyumna and his allies. The singling out of Arjuna's banner with the kapi shows that the spiritual and symbolic strength of the Pandavas surpasses the outward brilliance of banners: above the army stands a sign bound to divine protection and to the victory to come.
