"Brahman is the offering, Brahman is the sacrifice; it is offered by Brahman into the fire of Brahman. Brahman alone is to be attained by one absorbed in action as Brahman. Some yogins worship the divine sacrifice; others offer sacrifice by sacrifice itself into the fire of Brahman. Some offer hearing and the other senses into the fires of restraint; others offer sound and the other objects into the fires of the senses. Others offer all the actions of the senses and the actions of the pranas into the fire of the yoga of self-restraint, kindled by knowledge. Some perform sacrifice through possessions, others through austerity, others through yoga; ascetics of firm vows perform sacrifice through study and knowledge. Some offer prana into apana, others apana into prana; having restrained the movement of prana and apana, they are devoted to pranayama. Others, moderate in food, offer the pranas into the pranas. All these are knowers of sacrifice, their impurity destroyed by sacrifice. Tasting the nectar of the remnants of sacrifice, they go to the eternal Brahman. For one who does not perform sacrifice, not even this world exists — how then the other, O best of the Kurus? Thus many kinds of sacrifice are spread out in the mouth of Brahman; know them all as born of action. Knowing this, you will be freed."

The variety of sacrifices shows that spiritual action is not confined to a single outward rite. When the senses, breath, knowledge, possessions, and austerity are offered to the highest goal, they become a path of purification.
