Shri Bhagavan said: "O son of Pandu, he does not hate light, activity, and delusion when they arise, nor does he desire them when they cease. Abiding as if indifferent, he is not shaken by the gunas; he stands firm, understanding, 'The gunas are acting,' and does not waver. Equal in suffering and happiness, established in himself, the same toward a clod of earth, a stone, and gold, steadfast, equal toward the dear and the undear, toward blame and praise, toward honor and dishonor, the same toward the side of friend and foe, having abandoned all selfish undertakings — he is called one who has transcended the gunas."

One who has transcended the gunas does not suppress them by force nor identify with them. He sees them as movements of nature and thus preserves his balance amid the opposites.
