रथानीकं नरव्याघ्राः के चिद् अभ्यपतन् रथैः ॥
अभज्यन्त युगैर् एव युगानि भरतर्षभ ॥
रथेषाश् च रथेषाभिः कूबरा रथकूबरैः ॥
संहताः संहतैः के चित् परस्परजिघांसवः ॥
न शेकुश् चलितुं के चित् संनिपत्य रथा रथैः ॥
प्रभिन्नास् तु महाकायाः संनिपत्य गजा गजैः ॥
बहुधादारयन् क्रुद्धा विषाणैर् इतरेतरम् ॥
सतोमरपताकैश् च वारणाः परवारणैः ॥
अभिसृत्य महाराज वेगवद्भिर् महागजैः ॥
दन्तैर् अभिहतास् तत्र चुक्रुशुः परमातुराः ॥
अभिनीताश् च शिक्षाभिस् तोत्त्राङ्कुशसमाहताः ॥
सुप्रभिन्नाः प्रभिन्नानां संमुखाभिमुखा ययुः ॥
प्रभिन्नैर् अपि संसक्ताः के चित् तत्र महागजाः ॥
क्रौञ्चवन् निनदं मुक्त्वा प्राद्रवन्त ततस् ततः ॥
सम्यक् प्रणीता नागाश् च प्रभिन्नकरटामुखाः ॥
ऋष्टितोमरनाराचैर् निर्विद्धा वरवारणाः ॥
विनेदुर् भिन्नमर्माणो निपेतुश् च गतासवः ॥
प्राद्रवन्त दिशः के चिन् नदन्तो भैरवान् रवान् ॥

prabhinnair api saṃsaktāḥ ke cit tatra mahāgajāḥ ||
krauñcavan ninadaṃ muktvā prādravanta tatas tataḥ ||
samyak praṇītā nāgāś ca prabhinnakaraṭāmukhāḥ ||
ṛṣṭitomaranārācair nirviddhā varavāraṇāḥ ||
vinedur bhinnamarmāṇo nipetuś ca gatāsavaḥ ||
prādravanta diśaḥ ke cin nadanto bhairavān ravān ||
Tigers among men on chariots hurled themselves upon the chariot ranks; yoke broke against yoke, O best of the Bharatas. Poles clashed with poles, chariot-fronts with chariot-fronts; seeking to kill one another, some became locked together. Some chariots, having collided with chariots, could no longer move. Huge, rutting elephants, meeting elephant with elephant, furiously tore at each other with their tusks; war-elephants bearing banners and tomaras clashed with enemy elephants. Closing with swift, mighty elephants and wounded by their tusks, they wailed in intense pain. Guided by their training, driven on by goads and hooks, fiercely maddened elephants advanced straight against the maddened. Some huge elephants, locked with others equally maddened, let out cries like cranes and scattered in every direction. The finest, well-controlled elephants, their temples and faces streaming, pierced by spears, javelins, and iron arrows, bellowed with their vital organs torn open and fell lifeless, while others fled to the sides, uttering terrible, dreadful cries.
