द्वीपिचर्मावनद्धैश् च व्याघ्रचर्मशयैर् अपि ॥
विकोशैर् विमलैः खड्गैर् अभिजघ्नुः परान् रणे ॥
अभिप्लुतम् अभिक्रुद्धम् एकपार्श्वावदारितम् ॥
विदर्शयन्तः संपेतुः खड्गचर्मपरश्वधैः ॥
शक्तिभिर् दारिताः के चित् संछिन्नाश् च परश्वधैः ॥
हस्तिभिर् मृदिताः के चित् क्षुण्णाश् चान्ये तुरंगमैः ॥
रथनेमिनिकृत्ताश् च निकृत्ता निशितैः शरैः ॥
विक्रोशन्ति नरा राजंस् तत्र तत्र स्म बान्धवान् ॥

tarjayanti ca saṃhṛṣṭās tatra tatra parasparam ||
Warriors bearing shields covered with leopard skin and tiger hide, wielding drawn, gleaming swords, struck at the enemy in the fight. Charging in fury, with one flank torn open, displaying this, they closed with swords, shields, and axes. Some were torn by shaktis, others hacked apart by axes; some were crushed by elephants, others trampled by horses; some were cut by chariot rims, others felled by sharp arrows. Everywhere the men cried out, O king, to their kinsmen — some for sons, others for fathers, brothers, and loved ones, for uncles and nephews and others in the fight. Many, with entrails spilled out, with broken thighs, O Bharata, with arms severed from strong shoulders and flanks torn open, were seen wailing, thirsting, and clinging to life. Some, faint of heart and overcome by thirst, O lord of men, lay fallen upon the field of battle and begged only for water. Drenched in streams of blood and tormented, O Bharata, they bitterly cursed themselves and your assembled sons. Yet other valiant kshatriyas, bound by mutual enmity, would not release their weapons and uttered no cries of pain, O worthy one, but, exultant, went on threatening one another everywhere.
