Horsemen on swift steeds adorned with chamaras and headpieces charged upon one another as if riding swift swans. The great spears they loosed, decked with Jambunada gold, swift, bright, and sharp, flew like serpents. Some heroic cavalrymen on the swiftest horses leapt onto the great chariots and struck off the heads of charioteers; but the charioteers, when many riders came within arrow-range, killed them with well-feathered bhallas. Maddened elephants, adorned with gold and resembling clouds over mountains, knocked down horses and trampled them with their feet. Elephants whose temporal mounds and flanks were being torn, wounded by spears, bellowed in intense pain. Amid the terrible chaos, the finest elephants suddenly snatched up horses with their riders and hurled them away. Lifting horses and their riders on the tips of their tusks, the elephants wheeled about, crushing streams of bannered chariots. Some huge elephants, driven by rut and virile force, killed horses and riders with their trunks and feet. Other elephants seized even chariots together with their horses in their trunks and dragged them in every direction, filling the field with a medley of sounds. Swift, bright, and sharp arrows, like serpents, flew on, piercing the bodies of men and horses and their iron armor. Everywhere, O lord of men, gleaming shaktis fell, hurled by the arms of heroes, terrible as great meteors.
