एतच् छ्रुत्वा ततो राजा धृष्टद्युम्नं महारथम् ॥
अब्रवीत् समितौ तस्यां वासुदेवस्य शृण्वतः ॥
धृष्टद्युम्न निबोधेदं यत् त्वा वक्ष्यामि मारिष ॥
नातिक्रम्यं भवेत् तच् च वचनं मम भाषितम् ॥
भवान् सेनापतिर् मह्यं वासुदेवेन संमतः ॥
कार्त्तिकेयो यथा नित्यं देवानाम् अभवत् पुरा ॥
तथा त्वम् अपि पाण्डूनां सेनानीः पुरुषर्षभ ॥
स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल विक्रम्य जहि कौरवान् ॥
अहं च त्वानुयास्यामि भीमः कृष्णश् च मारिष ॥
माद्रीपुत्रौ च सहितौ द्रौपदेयाश् च दंशिताः ॥
ये चान्ये पृथिवीपालाः प्रधानाः पुरुषर्षभ ॥

dhṛṣṭadyumna nibodhedaṃ yat tvā vakṣyāmi māriṣa ||
nātikramyaṃ bhavet tac ca vacanaṃ mama bhāṣitam ||
bhavān senāpatir mahyaṃ vāsudevena saṃmataḥ ||
kārttikeyo yathā nityaṃ devānām abhavat purā ||
tathā tvam api pāṇḍūnāṃ senānīḥ puruṣarṣabha ||
sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla vikramya jahi kauravān ||
ahaṃ ca tvānuyāsyāmi bhīmaḥ kṛṣṇaś ca māriṣa ||
mādrīputrau ca sahitau draupadeyāś ca daṃśitāḥ ||
ye cānye pṛthivīpālāḥ pradhānāḥ puruṣarṣabha ||

धृष्टद्युम्नं महारथम्dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ mahārathamDhrishtadyumna, the great chariot-warrior; the maharatha Dhrishtadyumna
अब्रवीत् समितौ तस्याम्abravīt samitau tasyāmsaid in that assembly; spoke amid that gathering
वासुदेवस्य शृण्वतःvāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥwhile Vasudeva listened; as Vasudeva was listening
धृष्टद्युम्न निबोध इदम्dhṛṣṭadyumna nibodha idamDhrishtadyumna, understand this; Dhrishtadyumna, hear this
यत् त्वा वक्ष्यामि मारिषyat tvā vakṣyāmi māriṣawhat I shall tell you, O worthy one; what I am about to say to you
न अतिक्रम्यम् भवेत् तत् चna atikramyam bhavet tat caand this must not be transgressed; let this not be violated
वचनं मम भाषितम्vacanaṃ mama bhāṣitamthe word spoken by me; the speech uttered by me
भवान् सेनापतिः मह्यम्bhavān senāpatiḥ mahyamyou are my commander; you are my general
वासुदेवेन संमतःvāsudevena saṃmataḥapproved by Vasudeva; sanctioned by Krishna
कार्त्तिकेयः यथा नित्यम्kārttikeyaḥ yathā nityamas Karttikeya once always; as Skanda once was
देवानाम् अभवत् पुराdevānām abhavat purāwas for the gods of old; was for the gods in ancient times
तथा त्वम् अपि पाण्डूनाम्tathā tvam api pāṇḍūnāmso you too, for the sons of Pandu; so you, for the Pandavas
सेनानीः पुरुषर्षभsenānīḥ puruṣarṣabhaare the leader of the army, best of men; are the war-chief, foremost of men
स त्वम् पुरुषशार्दूलsa tvam puruṣaśārdūlaso you, tiger among men; therefore you, lion among men
विक्रम्य जहि कौरवान्vikramya jahi kauravānshow your valor and slay the Kauravas; display your prowess and strike down the Kurus
अहम् च त्वा अनुयास्यामिaham ca tvā anuyāsyāmiand I shall follow you; I too shall come after you
भीमः कृष्णः च मारिषbhīmaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ ca māriṣaBhima and Krishna, O worthy one; Bhima together with Krishna, O honored one
माद्रीपुत्रौ च सहितौmādrīputrau ca sahitauand the two sons of Madri together; the two Madri-born sons as one
द्रौपदेयाः च दंशिताःdraupadeyāḥ ca daṃśitāḥand the sons of Draupadi in armor; and the armed Draupadeyas
ये च अन्ये पृथिवीपालाःye ca anye pṛthivīpālāḥand whatever other lords of the earth; and the other kings
प्रधानाः पुरुषर्षभpradhānāḥ puruṣarṣabhaare foremost, best of men; are chief, O foremost of men
अनुवाद

Having heard this, the king then said to Dhrishtadyumna, the great chariot-warrior, in that assembly, while Vasudeva listened: 'Dhrishtadyumna, hear what I am about to tell you, O worthy one, and let this word of mine not be transgressed. You, approved by Vasudeva, are my commander, as Karttikeya was once forever the commander of the gods; so you too, O best of men, be the leader of the army of the sons of Pandu. Therefore, tiger among men, show your valor and slay the Kauravas. I shall follow you, and so will Bhima and Krishna, O worthy one, the two sons of Madri together, the armed sons of Draupadi, and whatever other foremost lords of the earth, O best of men.'
