संजय उवाच
शृणु राजन् स्थिरो भूत्वा युद्धम् एतत् सुदारुणम् ॥
न शक्यः पाण्डवो जेतुं देवैर् अपि सवासवैः ॥
द्रोणस् तु निशितैर् बाणैर् धृष्टद्युम्नम् अयोधयत् ॥
सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन रथनीडाद् अपातयत् ॥
तस्याथ चतुरो वाहांश् चतुर्भिः सायकोत्तमैः ॥
पीडयाम् आस संक्रुद्धो धृष्टद्युम्नस्य मारिष ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नस् ततो द्रोणं नवत्या निशितैः शरैः ॥
विव्याध प्रहसन् वीरस् तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ॥
ततः पुनर् अमेयात्मा भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ॥
शरैः प्रच्छादयाम् आस धृष्टद्युम्नम् अमर्षणम् ॥
आददे च शरं घोरं पार्षतस्य वधं प्रति ॥
शक्राशनिसमस्पर्शं मृत्युदण्डम् इवापरम् ॥
हाहाकारो महान् आसीत् सर्वसैन्यस्य भारत ॥
तम् इषुं संधितं दृष्ट्वा भारद्वाजेन संयुगे ॥
तत्राद्भुतम् अपश्याम धृष्टद्युम्नस्य पौरुषम् ॥
यद् एकः समरे वीरस् तस्थौ गिरिर् इवाचलः ॥
तं च दीप्तं शरं घोरम् आयान्तं मृत्युम् आत्मनः ॥
चिच्छेद शरवृष्टिं च भारद्वाजे मुमोच ह ॥
तत उच्चुक्रुशुः सर्वे पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नेन तत् कर्म कृतं दृष्ट्वा सुदुष्करम् ॥

dhṛṣṭadyumnas tato droṇaṃ navatyā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
vivyādha prahasan vīras tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti cābravīt ||
tataḥ punar ameyātmā bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān ||
śaraiḥ pracchādayām āsa dhṛṣṭadyumnam amarṣaṇam ||
ādade ca śaraṃ ghoraṃ pārṣatasya vadhaṃ prati ||
śakrāśanisamasparśaṃ mṛtyudaṇḍam ivāparam ||
hāhākāro mahān āsīt sarvasainyasya bhārata ||
tam iṣuṃ saṃdhitaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhāradvājena saṃyuge ||
tatrādbhutam apaśyāma dhṛṣṭadyumnasya pauruṣam ||
yad ekaḥ samare vīras tasthau girir ivācalaḥ ||
taṃ ca dīptaṃ śaraṃ ghoram āyāntaṃ mṛtyum ātmanaḥ ||
ciccheda śaravṛṣṭiṃ ca bhāradvāje mumoca ha ||
tata uccukruśuḥ sarve pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnena tat karma kṛtaṃ dṛṣṭvā suduṣkaram ||

युद्धम् एतत् सुदारुणम्yuddham etat sudāruṇamthis exceedingly dreadful battle; this terrible fight
न शक्यः पाण्डवः जेतुम्na śakyaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ jetumthe Pandava cannot be conquered; the Pandava is not to be overcome
देवैः अपि सवासवैःdevaiḥ api savāsavaiḥeven by the gods together with Vasava; even by the devas together with Indra
द्रोणः तु निशितैः बाणैःdroṇaḥ tu niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥDrona, however, with sharpened arrows; but Drona, with keen shafts
धृष्टद्युम्नम् अयोधयत्dhṛṣṭadyumnam ayodhayatfought with Dhrishtadyumna; battled Dhrishtadyumna
सारथिम् च अस्य भल्लेनsārathim ca asya bhallenaand with a bhalla-arrow his charioteer; and his charioteer, with a broad-headed shaft
रथनीडात् अपातयत्rathanīḍāt apātayathe cast down from the chariot seat; he threw down from the ratha
तस्य अथ चतुरो वाहान्tasya atha caturo vāhānthen his four horses; next, his four steeds
चतुर्भिः सायकोत्तमैःcaturbhiḥ sāyakottamaiḥwith four excellent arrows; with four superb shafts
पीडयाम् आस संक्रुद्धःpīḍayām āsa saṃkruddhaḥthe enraged one afflicted; the furious one struck down
धृष्टद्युम्नस्य मारिषdhṛṣṭadyumnasya māriṣabelonging to Dhrishtadyumna, honored one; of Dhrishtadyumna, revered sir
धृष्टद्युम्नः ततः द्रोणम्dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ tataḥ droṇamDhrishtadyumna then pierced Drona; then Dhrishtadyumna struck Drona
नवत्या निशितैः शरैःnavatyā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥwith ninety sharpened arrows; with ninety keen shafts
विव्याध प्रहसन् वीरःvivyādha prahasan vīraḥpierced him, laughing, the hero; the hero struck him, smiling
तिष्ठ तिष्ठ इति च अब्रवीत्tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti ca abravītand said: stand, stand; and cried out: stay, stay
ततः पुनः अमेयात्माtataḥ punaḥ ameyātmāthen again the immeasurable-souled; after that once more the boundless-spirited
भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान्bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavānBharadvaja, the blazing one; the mighty son of Bharadvaja
शरैः प्रच्छादयाम् आसśaraiḥ pracchādayām āsacovered with arrows; shrouded with shafts
धृष्टद्युम्नम् अमर्षणम्dhṛṣṭadyumnam amarṣaṇamDhrishtadyumna, the impatient one; the wrathful Dhrishtadyumna
आददे च शरम् घोरम्ādade ca śaram ghoramand took up a terrible arrow; and seized a dreadful shaft
पार्षतस्य वधम् प्रतिpārṣatasya vadham pratifor the slaying of Parshata; to kill Dhrishtadyumna
शक्राशनिसमस्पर्शम्śakrāśanisamasparśamwhose touch was like Shakra's thunderbolt; resembling the stroke of Indra
मृत्युदण्डम् इव अपरम्mṛtyudaṇḍam iva aparamlike another rod of death; as if a second staff of Yama
हाहाकारः महान् आसीत्hāhākāraḥ mahān āsīta great outcry arose; a mighty wail went up
सर्वसैन्यस्य भारतsarvasainyasya bhārataof the whole army, O Bharata; throughout the entire host
तम् इषुम् संधितम् दृष्ट्वाtam iṣum saṃdhitam dṛṣṭvāseeing that arrow fitted to the bow; beholding this aimed shaft
भारद्वाजेन संयुगेbhāradvājena saṃyugeby the son of Bharadvaja in battle; drawn by Bharadvaja's son in the fight
तत्र अद्भुतम् अपश्यामtatra adbhutam apaśyāmathere we beheld a wonder; then we witnessed something marvelous
धृष्टद्युम्नस्य पौरुषम्dhṛṣṭadyumnasya pauruṣamthe manliness of Dhrishtadyumna; the valor of Drupada's son
यत् एकः समरे वीरःyat ekaḥ samare vīraḥthat alone, in the battle, the hero; how the solitary hero in the fight
तस्थौ गिरिः इव अचलःtasthau giriḥ iva acalaḥstood like an unmoving mountain; remained like an unshaken peak
तम् च दीप्तम् शरम् घोरम्tam ca dīptam śaram ghoramand that blazing, dreadful arrow; and this burning, terrible shaft
आयान्तम् मृत्युम् आत्मनःāyāntam mṛtyum ātmanaḥcoming on as his own death; advancing as his very death
चिच्छेद शरवृष्टिम् चciccheda śaravṛṣṭim cahe cut it, and a shower of arrows; he sundered it, and a rain of shafts
भारद्वाजे मुमोच हbhāradvāje mumoca hahe loosed upon the son of Bharadvaja; he poured upon Drona
ततः उच्चुक्रुशुः सर्वेtataḥ uccukruśuḥ sarvethen all cried out; then everyone shouted
पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सहpāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ sahathe Panchalas together with the Pandavas; the warriors of Panchala with the Pandavas
धृष्टद्युम्नेन तत् कर्मdhṛṣṭadyumnena tat karmaat that deed of Dhrishtadyumna; at this feat of Dhrishtadyumna
कृतम् दृष्ट्वा सुदुष्करम्kṛtam dṛṣṭvā suduṣkaramseeing it accomplished, exceedingly hard; beholding it done, a most difficult act
अनुवाद

Sanjaya said: "Listen, O king, and steady yourself: this battle was exceedingly dreadful. The Pandava cannot be conquered even by the gods together with Indra. Drona, with sharpened arrows, fought against Dhrishtadyumna and cast his charioteer down from the chariot seat with a bhalla-arrow. Then, enraged, Drona struck down Dhrishtadyumna's four horses with four excellent arrows, O honored one. Then the hero Dhrishtadyumna, laughing, pierced Drona with ninety sharpened arrows and cried, 'Stand! Stand!' After this the blazing son of Bharadvaja, immeasurable in spirit, again covered the wrathful Dhrishtadyumna with arrows and took up a terrible arrow to slay Parshata; its touch was like Shakra's thunderbolt, as if it were another staff of death. When the whole army saw that arrow fitted to the bow by the son of Bharadvaja, a great outcry arose, O Bharata. Then we beheld the wondrous courage of Dhrishtadyumna: the hero stood alone in the battle, unmoving as a mountain. He cut that blazing, dreadful arrow that came on as his own death, and poured a rain of arrows upon the son of Bharadvaja. Seeing this most difficult deed accomplished by Dhrishtadyumna, all the Panchalas together with the Pandavas cried out."
