Then the valorous Dhrishtadyumna, desiring Drona's death, hurled at him a swift shakti adorned with gold and beryl. The son of Bharadvaja, as if laughing, cut this gold-adorned spear into three pieces as it rushed upon him in battle. Seeing the shakti destroyed, the blazing Dhrishtadyumna poured showers of arrows upon Drona, O lord of men. But the far-famed Drona, warding off that rain of arrows, cut through the bow of Drupada's son at its center. Left without a bow in battle, the mighty and far-famed Dhrishtadyumna hurled at Drona a heavy mace, hard as the very essence of a mountain. That mace, swiftly released, flew forth to kill Drona, and there we beheld the wondrous prowess of the son of Bharadvaja. With agility he deflected the gold-adorned mace, and having turned it aside, he sent against Parshata sharp yellow bhalla-arrows with gold feathers, whetted on stone. They pierced his armor and drank his blood in that combat. Then the great-minded Dhrishtadyumna took up another bow, boldly assailed Drona in battle, and pierced him with five arrows. Then both these foremost of men, stained with blood, shone, O king, like two blossoming kimshuka trees in the season of spring."

Drona and Dhrishtadyumna fight as adversaries bound together by fate: every blow of one draws a fresh answer from the other. The beauty of the flowering trees here does not soften the blood; it shows the terrible mingling of splendor and pain.
