प्रभज्यमानं तत् सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा देवकिनन्दनः ॥
उवाच पार्थं बीभत्सुं निगृह्य रथम् उत्तमम् ॥
अयं स कालः संप्राप्तः पार्थ यः काङ्क्षितस् त्वया ॥
प्रहरास्मै नरव्याघ्र न चेन् मोहाद् विमुह्यसे ॥
यत् त्वया कथितं वीर पुरा राज्ञां समागमे ॥
भीष्मद्रोणमुखान् सर्वान् धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैनिकान् ॥
सानुबन्धान् हनिष्यामि ये मां योत्स्यन्ति संयुगे ॥
इति तत् कुरु कौन्तेय सत्यं वाक्यम् अरिंदम ॥
बीभत्सो पश्य सैन्यं स्वं भज्यमानं समन्ततः ॥
द्रवतश् च महीपालान् सर्वान् यौधिष्ठिरे बले ॥
दृष्ट्वा हि समरे भीष्मं व्यात्ताननम् इवान्तकम् ॥
भयार्ताः संप्रणश्यन्ति सिंहं क्षुद्रमृगा इव ॥
एवम् उक्तः प्रत्युवाच वासुदेवं धनंजयः ॥
चोदयाश्वान् यतो भीष्मो विगाह्यैतद् बलार्णवम् ॥

ayaṃ sa kālaḥ saṃprāptaḥ pārtha yaḥ kāṅkṣitas tvayā ||
praharāsmai naravyāghra na cen mohād vimuhyase ||
yat tvayā kathitaṃ vīra purā rājñāṃ samāgame ||
bhīṣmadroṇamukhān sarvān dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainikān ||
sānubandhān haniṣyāmi ye māṃ yotsyanti saṃyuge ||
iti tat kuru kaunteya satyaṃ vākyam ariṃdama ||
bībhatso paśya sainyaṃ svaṃ bhajyamānaṃ samantataḥ ||
dravataś ca mahīpālān sarvān yaudhiṣṭhire bale ||
dṛṣṭvā hi samare bhīṣmaṃ vyāttānanam ivāntakam ||
bhayārtāḥ saṃpraṇaśyanti siṃhaṃ kṣudramṛgā iva ||
evam uktaḥ pratyuvāca vāsudevaṃ dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
codayāśvān yato bhīṣmo vigāhyaitad balārṇavam ||

प्रभज्यमानम् तत् सैन्यम्prabhajyamānam tat sainyamthat army being routed; that host being broken
दृष्ट्वा देवकिनन्दनःdṛṣṭvā devakinandanaḥseeing it, the son of Devaki; the son of Devaki, having seen
उवाच पार्थम् बीभत्सुम्uvāca pārtham bībhatsumsaid to Partha Bibhatsu; spoke to Arjuna
निगृह्य रथम् उत्तमम्nigṛhya ratham uttamamreining in his splendid chariot; having checked his excellent chariot
अयम् स कालः संप्राप्तःayam sa kālaḥ saṃprāptaḥthis is that very moment that has come; the very hour has arrived
पार्थ यः काङ्क्षितः त्वयाpārtha yaḥ kāṅkṣitaḥ tvayāO Partha, which you have longed for; which you have desired
प्रहर अस्मै नरव्याघ्रprahara asmai naravyāghrastrike him, tiger among men; attack him, O best of warriors
न चेत् मोहात् विमुह्यसेna cet mohāt vimuhyaseif you are not bewildered by delusion; unless you fall into confusion
यत् त्वया कथितम् वीरyat tvayā kathitam vīrawhat you declared, O hero; that which you spoke
पुरा राज्ञाम् समागमेpurā rājñām samāgameearlier in the assembly of kings; before, in the gathering of kings
भीष्मद्रोणमुखान् सर्वान्bhīṣmadroṇamukhān sarvānall headed by Bhishma and Drona; all beginning with Bhishma
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैनिकान्dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainikānthe soldiers of Dhritarashtra's son; the warriors of the son of Dhritarashtra
सानुबन्धान् हनिष्यामिsānubandhān haniṣyāmiI will slay together with their followers; I shall destroy them with their allies
ये माम् योत्स्यन्ति संयुगेye mām yotsyanti saṃyugewhoever will fight me in battle; any who will oppose me in combat
इति तत् कुरु कौन्तेयiti tat kuru kaunteyathus — fulfill that, O son of Kunti; carry that out, Kaunteya
सत्यम् वाक्यम् अरिंदमsatyam vākyam ariṃdamamake your word true, O tamer of foes; make your speech truthful, slayer of enemies
बीभत्सो पश्य सैन्यम् स्वम्bībhatso paśya sainyam svamBibhatsu, look upon your own army; Arjuna, behold your own host
भज्यमानम् समन्ततःbhajyamānam samantataḥbeing routed on every side; broken all around
द्रवतः च महीपालान्dravataḥ ca mahīpālānand the kings who are fleeing; and the fleeing lords of the earth
सर्वान् यौधिष्ठिरे बलेsarvān yaudhiṣṭhire baleall of them, in the army of Yudhishthira; throughout the host of Yudhishthira
दृष्ट्वा हि समरे भीष्मम्dṛṣṭvā hi samare bhīṣmamfor having seen Bhishma in battle; seeing Bhishma in the fight
व्यात्ताननम् इव अन्तकम्vyāttānanam iva antakamlike Death with jaws agape; as if he were Death with open mouth
भयार्ताः संप्रणश्यन्तिbhayārtāḥ saṃpraṇaśyantitormented by fear, they flee away; stricken with terror, they scatter
सिंहम् क्षुद्रमृगाः इवsiṃham kṣudramṛgāḥ ivalike small beasts fleeing a lion; as small creatures flee a lion
एवम् उक्तः प्रत्युवाचevam uktaḥ pratyuvācathus addressed, he answered; spoken to thus, he replied
वासुदेवम् धनंजयःvāsudevam dhanaṃjayaḥDhananjaya to Vasudeva; Arjuna to Krishna
चोदया अश्वान् यतः भीष्मःcodayā aśvān yataḥ bhīṣmaḥdrive the horses to where Bhishma is; urge the horses toward Bhishma
विगाह्य एतत् बलार्णवम्vigāhya etat balārṇavamplunging into this ocean of an army; diving into this sea of troops
अनुवाद

Seeing that army being routed, the son of Devaki reined in his splendid chariot and said to Partha Bibhatsu: "O Partha, the very hour you have longed for has come. Strike him, tiger among men, if you are not bewildered by delusion. What you, O hero, declared before in the assembly of kings — 'I will slay all the soldiers of Dhritarashtra's son, headed by Bhishma and Drona, together with their followers, whoever fights me in battle' — fulfill that now, O son of Kunti; make your word true, O tamer of foes. Bibhatsu, look at your own army being routed on every side, and at all the kings in the host of Yudhishthira put to flight. Seeing Bhishma in battle, like Death with jaws agape, they flee in terror, as small creatures flee before a lion." Thus addressed, Dhananjaya answered Vasudeva: "Drive the horses to where Bhishma is, plunging into this ocean of an army."
