Seeing that the wise Bhagadatta had broken his army, the enraged Ghatotkacha rushed at him. Assuming a dreadful form, the monstrous man, with blazing mouth and burning eyes, as if aflame with fury, seized a vast spear capable of splitting even mountains. Desiring to slay the elephant at once, the mighty Ghatotkacha hurled that spear, engulfed on every side by sparks and flame. Seeing this fiery spear hurtling suddenly toward him in the battle, Bhagadatta let fly a beautiful, sharp, half-moon-headed arrow, and with that swift shaft cleaved the huge spear. The gold-wrought spear, cut in two, fell like a great thunderbolt loosed by Shakra dropping from the sky. Seeing the spear fallen, cut in half, that king seized a great shakti with a golden shaft, resembling a tongue of flame, and hurled it at the rakshasa, crying, "Stand! Stand!" Seeing it flying toward him through the air like a thunderbolt, the rakshasa leapt up at once, caught it, and roared. Bracing it swiftly against his knee, O Bharata, he broke it; before the eyes of the lord of kings this seemed a wonder. Beholding this deed done by the mighty rakshasa, the gods with the gandharvas in heaven, and the sages too, were amazed. The Pandavas, great archers led by Bhimasena, made the earth resound with cries of "Well done! Well done!" Hearing that great roar of the joyful great souls, the valiant Bhagadatta, the mighty archer, could not bear it. Drawing his great bow, which sounded like Indra's thunderbolt, he charged with speed at the great chariot-warriors of the Pandavas, loosing bright, sharp iron shafts blazing like fire. He pierced Bhima with one arrow, the rakshasa with nine, Abhimanyu with three, and the Kekayas likewise with five. With a shaft loosed at full draw, feathered in gold, he pierced the right arm of Kshatradeva in the fight, and his fine bow, together with the arrow, fell suddenly from him. Then he struck the five sons of Draupadi with five arrows, and in wrath slew the horses of Bhimasena. With three arrows he cut down his lion banner, and with three more feathered shafts pierced his charioteer Vishoka; he, gravely wounded and tormented by Bhagadatta in the battle, sank down upon the platform of the chariot, best of the Bharatas. Then Bhima, the great king, though without his chariot yet the finest of charioteers, swiftly seized his mace and leapt down from the car. Seeing him with his mace upraised, like a peaked mountain, a terrible fear seized your warriors, O Bharata. At that very moment the Pandava came, whose charioteer was Krishna, the great king, slaying his foes by the thousand. He arrived at the place where those two tigers among men, father and son, Bhimasena and Ghatotkacha, scorchers of their enemies, were locked in battle with the lord of Pragjyotisha. Seeing the great chariot-warriors fighting, Arjuna hastened there, scattering arrows, O best of the Bharatas. Then King Duryodhana, the swift great chariot-warrior, quickly moved forward his army, full of chariots, elephants, and horses. The white-horsed Pandava charged swiftly at this vast army of the Kauravas, suddenly advancing. Bhagadatta, meanwhile, in battle upon that elephant, crushing the army of the Pandavas, rushed at Yudhishthira. Then a tumultuous battle broke out around Bhagadatta with the Panchalas, the Srinjayas, and the armed Kekayas, O honored one. And Bhimasena in the battle told Keshava and Arjuna everything as it had happened — of the great death of Iravan.

This part of the chapter joins two threads: the wondrous strength of Ghatotkacha astonishes even the gods, yet Bhagadatta does not break, and answers with precise martial skill. Arjuna's arrival with Krishna turns the scene toward the next turn: the personal grief over Iravan's death finally reaches his father.
