अनुवाद

The great warriors could not bear the cutting of Bhishma's bow: Drona, Kritavarman, Jayadratha lord of Sindhu, Bhurishravas, Shala, Shalya, and Bhagadatta - these seven, in utmost fury, rushed upon Kiritin. Displaying the finest divine astras, the great chariot-fighters attacked fiercely and covered the Pandavas with missiles. The roar of their onslaught against Phalguna was heard like the surging of oceans at the end of an age. "Kill! Seize! Capture! Fight and cut down!" - such was the tumultuous cry around Phalguna's chariot. Hearing this din, the great warriors of the Pandavas rushed to save Phalguna, O bull of the Bharatas: Satyaki, Bhimasena, Dhrishtadyumna son of Prishata, both King Virata and King Drupada, the rakshasa Ghatotkacha, and the enraged Abhimanyu. These seven, overcome by wrath and bearing many-colored bows, hastened forward. Among them a tumultuous, hair-raising battle broke out, O best of the Bharatas, like a battle of gods against danavas. Shikhandin, the finest of chariot-warriors, protected by Kiritin, pierced Bhishma - now deprived of his bow - with ten arrows, his charioteer with ten, and cut down his banner with one. The son of Ganga took up another, still mightier bow, but Phalguna severed that too with three sharp bhallas. Thus the enraged Pandava, Savyasachin, scorcher of foes, cut down every bow that Bhishma took up, again and again. Then Bhishma, bowless and enraged, licking the corners of his mouth, seized a shakti capable of splitting even mountains and hurled it at Phalguna's chariot. Seeing it come flying, blazing like lightning, the joy of the Pandavas took up five sharp bhallas. The enraged Kiritin, O best of the Bharatas, with five arrows cut that shakti - hurled by the strength of Bhishma's arm - into five pieces. Severed by the furious Arjuna, it fell like a bolt of lightning broken loose from a mass of clouds. Seeing his shakti cut down, the hero Bhishma, conqueror of enemy cities, fell to pondering in the midst of battle."
