शिखण्डी तु महाराज भरतानां पितामहम् ॥
आजघानोरसि क्रुद्धो नवभिर् निशितैः शरैः ॥
स तेनाभिहतः संख्ये भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः ॥
नाकम्पत महाराज क्षितिकम्पे यथाचलः ॥
ततः प्रहस्य बीभत्सुर् व्याक्षिपन् गाण्डिवं धनुः ॥
गाङ्गेयं पञ्चविंशत्या क्षुद्रकाणां समर्पयत् ॥
पुनः शरशतेनैनं त्वरमाणो धनंजयः ॥
सर्वगात्रेषु संक्रुद्धः सर्वमर्मस्व् अताडयत् ॥
एवम् अन्यैर् अपि भृशं वध्यमानो महारणे ॥
न चक्रुस् ते रुजं तस्य रुक्मपुङ्खाः शिलाशिताः ॥
ततः किरीटी संरब्धो भीष्मम् एवाभ्यवर्तत ॥
शिखण्डिनं पुरस्कृत्य धनुश् चास्य समाच्छिनत् ॥
अथैनं दशभिर् विद्ध्वा ध्वजम् एकेन चिच्छिदे ॥
सारथिं विशिखैश् चास्य दशभिः समकम्पयत् ॥
सो ऽन्यत् कार्मुकम् आदत्त गाङ्गेयो बलवत्तरम् ॥
तद् अप्य् अस्य शितैर् भल्लैस् त्रिधा त्रिभिर् उपानुदत् ॥
निमेषान्तरमात्रेण आत्तम् आत्तं महारणे ॥
एवम् अस्य धनूंष्य् आजौ चिच्छेद सुबहून्य् अपि ॥
ततः शांतनवो भीष्मो बीभत्सुं नाभ्यवर्तत ॥
अथैनं पञ्चविंशत्या क्षुद्रकाणां समर्दयत् ॥
सो ऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासो दुःशासनम् अभाषत ॥
एष पार्थो रणे क्रुद्धः पाण्डवानां महारथः ॥
शरैर् अनेकसाहस्रैर् माम् एवाभ्यसते रणे ॥
न चैष शक्यः समरे जेतुं वज्रभृता अपि ॥
न चापि सहिता वीरा देवदानवराक्षसाः ॥
मां चैव शक्ता निर्जेतुं किम् उ मर्त्याः सुदुर्बलाः ॥

tataḥ kirīṭī saṃrabdho bhīṣmam evābhyavartata ||
śikhaṇḍinaṃ puraskṛtya dhanuś cāsya samācchinat ||
athainaṃ daśabhir viddhvā dhvajam ekena cicchide ||
sārathiṃ viśikhaiś cāsya daśabhiḥ samakampayat ||
so 'nyat kārmukam ādatta gāṅgeyo balavattaram ||
tad apy asya śitair bhallais tridhā tribhir upānudat ||
nimeṣāntaramātreṇa āttam āttaṃ mahāraṇe ||
evam asya dhanūṃṣy ājau ciccheda subahūny api ||
tataḥ śāṃtanavo bhīṣmo bībhatsuṃ nābhyavartata ||
athainaṃ pañcaviṃśatyā kṣudrakāṇāṃ samardayat ||
so 'tividdho maheṣvāso duḥśāsanam abhāṣata ||
eṣa pārtho raṇe kruddhaḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahārathaḥ ||
śarair anekasāhasrair mām evābhyasate raṇe ||
na caiṣa śakyaḥ samare jetuṃ vajrabhṛtā api ||
na cāpi sahitā vīrā devadānavarākṣasāḥ ||
māṃ caiva śaktā nirjetuṃ kim u martyāḥ sudurbalāḥ ||

सः तेन अभिहतः संख्येsaḥ tena abhihataḥ saṃkhyestruck by him in battle; wounded by him in the fight

ततः प्रहस्य बीभत्सुःtataḥ prahasya bībhatsuḥthen, laughing, Bibhatsu; then Arjuna, with a smile
व्याक्षिपन् गाण्डिवम् धनुःvyākṣipan gāṇḍivam dhanuḥdrawing his bow Gandiva; flexing the Gandiva bow
गाङ्गेयम् पञ्चविंशत्याgāṅgeyam pañcaviṃśatyāstruck the son of Ganga with twenty-five; hit Bhishma with twenty-five

पाण्डवानाम् महारथःpāṇḍavānām mahārathaḥthe great chariot-warrior of the Pandavas; the great fighter of the Pandavas
शरैः अनेकसाहस्रैःśaraiḥ anekasāhasraiḥwith many thousands of arrows; with thousands upon thousands of shafts
माम् एव अभ्यसते रणेmām eva abhyasate raṇeassails me alone in battle; presses only upon me in the fight
न च एष शक्यः समरेna ca eṣa śakyaḥ samarehe cannot be conquered in battle; he is unconquerable in war
जेतुम् वज्रभृता अपिjetum vajrabhṛtā apieven by the wielder of the thunderbolt; even by Indra himself
न च अपि सहिताः वीराःna ca api sahitāḥ vīrāḥnor even the assembled heroes together; not even the united heroes
देवदानवराक्षसाःdevadānavarākṣasāḥgods, danavas, and rakshasas; devas, asuras, and rakshasas
माम् च एव शक्ताः निर्जेतुम्mām ca eva śaktāḥ nirjetumare able to overcome even me; could defeat even me
किम् उ मर्त्याः सुदुर्बलाःkim u martyāḥ sudurbalāḥhow much less feeble mortals?"; let alone weak men?"
अनुवाद

But Shikhandin, O great king, in fury struck the grandfather of the Bharatas in the chest with nine sharp arrows. Struck by him in the fight, Bhishma, grandfather of the Kurus, did not tremble, O great king, as a mountain does not tremble in an earthquake. Then Bibhatsu, laughing and drawing his bow Gandiva, planted twenty-five small arrows in the son of Ganga. Then Dhananjaya, acting swiftly and in fury, struck him with a hundred arrows across his whole body, at every vital point. And though others too struck him hard in that great battle with gold-feathered, stone-sharpened arrows, they caused him no pain. Then the enraged Kiritin, placing Shikhandin in front, again advanced straight upon Bhishma and cut his bow. Then, piercing him with ten arrows, he cut down his banner with one, and shook his charioteer with ten more. The son of Ganga took up another, still mightier bow, but this too Arjuna broke into three pieces with three sharp bhallas, within the span of a single blink. Thus in the great battle he cut down every bow Bhishma took up, one after another. After this, Bhishma, son of Shantanu, no longer advanced against Bibhatsu. But Arjuna struck him with twenty-five more small arrows. Sorely pierced, the great archer Bhishma spoke to Duhshasana: "This enraged Partha, great chariot-warrior of the Pandavas, presses upon me alone in battle with many thousands of arrows. He cannot be conquered in battle even by the wielder of the thunderbolt; and not even the gods, danavas, and rakshasas together are able to overcome me - how much less feeble mortals?"
