अक्षौहिण्यो दशैका च वशगाः सन्तु ते ऽनघ ॥
ताभिः शत्रून् प्रतिव्यूह्य जहीन्द्रो दानवान् इव ॥
प्रयातु नो भवान् अग्रे देवानाम् इव पावकिः ॥
अनुयास्यामहे त्व् आजौ सौरभेया इवर्षभम् ॥
उग्रधन्वा महेष्वासो दिव्यं विस्फारयन् धनुः ॥
अग्रे भवन्तं दृष्ट्वा नो नार्जुनः प्रसहिष्यते ॥
ध्रुवं युधिष्ठिरं संख्ये सानुबन्धं सबान्धवम् ॥
जेष्यामि पुरुषव्याघ्र भवान् सेनापतिर् यदि ॥

[Duryodhana:] Let eleven akshauhinis be at your disposal, O sinless one; with them, having arrayed the ranks against the enemies, destroy them as Indra [destroyed] the danavas. Go forth before us, as the son of Fire [Skanda] before the gods; and we shall follow you in battle, as bulls [follow] the leader of the herd. Fearsome archer, mighty bowman, twanging your wondrous bow -- seeing you at the head, Arjuna will not overcome us. Surely I shall vanquish Yudhishthira in battle, with his followers and kin, O tiger among men, if you are the commander.

Duryodhana hands Drona eleven armies and all his hope -- 'if you are commander, I shall prevail.' So his whole confidence again rests on a single man: Drona takes Bhishma's place, but the nature of the reliance does not change. The image of bulls following their leader, and Skanda before the gods, portrays the leader as the point where the will of the many converges; and this is good when the leader leads toward truth. But here hope is placed in the teacher for the sake of triumph over the righteous, and so, for all its splendor, it is doomed. The verse teaches that a single command animates an army; but that confidence resting on a mortal leader, rather than on righteousness, is as fragile as he himself is mortal -- and 'I shall surely vanquish' the righteous is self-deception.
