देवनागरी
व्यक्तं दिष्टं हि बलवत् पौरुषाद् इति मे मतिः ॥
यद् द्रोणो निहतः शूरः पार्षतेन महात्मना ॥
अस्त्रं चतुर्विधं वीरे यस्मिन्न् आसीत् प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥
तम् इष्वस्त्रवराचार्यं द्रोणं शंससि मे हतम् ॥

अनुवाद
Clearly, fate is stronger than human effort — this is my conviction — since the hero Drona was slain by the great-souled Parshata [Dhrishtadyumna]. Him in whom the fourfold art of arms was rooted, that most excellent teacher of archery, Drona, you now proclaim to me as slain.

Dhritarashtra draws a bitter conclusion: "fate is stronger than effort." There is truth in this, but also self-deception: destiny is neither blind nor arbitrary — it is the fulfillment of dharma, retribution for deeds. The blind king calls "fate" what is in fact the fruit of his own indulgence of wrongdoing; this is easier than admitting guilt. The verse teaches that behind the word "fate" often hides an unwillingness to see the cause in oneself; that the preordained is not blind arbitrariness but the ripened fruit of deeds; and that wisdom lies not in lamenting the omnipotence of fate but in perceiving within it the justice that overtakes wrongdoing — which the grieving king is not yet willing to do.
