दृप्तानां प्रतिषेद्धासीद् धार्मिकानां च रक्षिता ॥
यो ऽत्याक्षीत् कृपणस्यार्थे प्राणान् अपि परंतपः ॥
मन्दानां मम पुत्राणां जयाशा यस्य विक्रमे ॥
बृहस्पत्युशनस्तुल्यो बुद्ध्या स निहतः कथम् ॥

अनुवाद
He was the restrainer of the arrogant and the protector of the righteous, a chastiser of foes, who did not spare even his own life for the sake of the helpless. He in whose valor lay all the hope of victory of my unwise sons, equal to Brihaspati and Ushanas in intellect — how was he slain?

In praising Drona, the king unwittingly pronounces judgment on himself: "the hope of my unwise sons lay in his valor" — the entire support of an unrighteous cause rested on a single man, and the sons are called "unwise" by their own father. It is telling that Drona's greatest virtues — restraining the proud, protecting the righteous, sacrificing himself for the weak — are virtues of dharma; and it is all the more bitter that their bearer fell while serving adharma. The verse teaches that even the possessor of perfect virtues perishes when he entrusts them to an unrighteous cause; that a father who calls his sons "unwise" thereby exposes his own guilt in indulging them; and that support placed upon a single man, however great, is a weakness that his fall lays bare.
