ब्राह्मे वेदे तथेष्व् अस्त्रे यम् उपासन् गुणार्थिनः ॥
ब्राह्मणा राजपुत्राश् च स कथं मृत्युना हतः ॥
शोषणं सागरस्येव मेरोर् इव विसर्पणम् ॥
पतनं भास्करस्येव न मृष्ये द्रोणपातनम् ॥

अनुवाद
He whom brahmins and princes, craving excellence, revered as their teacher in sacred knowledge, in the Veda, and in archery — how has he been slain by death? Like the drying up of the ocean, like the shifting of Mount Meru, like the falling of the sun — Drona's death I cannot bear.

The images of the impossible — a dried ocean, a shifted Meru, a fallen sun — reveal what Drona was for the world of knowledge: an unshakable foundation, whose collapse is as unthinkable as imagining the end of a heavenly body. It is telling that he is praised first as a teacher of the Veda, and only afterward in weaponry: his primacy lay in wisdom, and so his loss is a loss to learning itself. The verse teaches that the departure of a great teacher shakes the world more than the death of a warrior, for with him it is not strength but knowledge that diminishes; that the pillars on which the transmission of wisdom rests seem irreplaceable; and that grief for such a man resembles grief for the dimming of the very light that nourishes minds.
