यद्य् अहत्वा वयं युद्धे निवर्तेम धनंजयम् ॥
तेन चाभ्यर्दितास् त्रासाद् भवेम हि पराङ्मुखाः ॥
यदि त्व् असुकरं लोके कर्म कुर्याम संयुगे ॥
इष्टान् पुण्यकृतां लोकान् प्राप्नुयाम न संशयः ॥
एवम् उक्त्वा ततो राजंस् ते ऽभ्यवर्तन्त संयुगे ॥
आह्वयन्तो ऽर्जुनं वीराः पितृजुष्टां दिशं प्रति ॥

yady ahatvā vayaṃ yuddhe nivartema dhanaṃjayam ||
tena cābhyarditās trāsād bhavema hi parāṅmukhāḥ ||
yadi tv asukaraṃ loke karma kuryāma saṃyuge ||
iṣṭān puṇyakṛtāṃ lokān prāpnuyāma na saṃśayaḥ ||
evam uktvā tato rājaṃs te 'bhyavartanta saṃyuge ||
āhvayanto 'rjunaṃ vīrāḥ pitṛjuṣṭāṃ diśaṃ prati ||

अनुवाद

[They declared:] '...[may we attain all those worlds] should it be that we retreat in battle without having slain Dhananjaya [Arjuna], and, being hard-pressed by him, turn our backs out of dread. But should we accomplish in battle a deed impossible for others, may we without doubt attain the longed-for worlds of those who do good.' Having spoken thus, O king, those warriors set out to the fray, challenging Arjuna, advancing toward the southern quarter favored by the ancestors.
