संजय उवाच
अनुज्ञातस् ततो राज्ञा परिष्वक्तश् च फल्गुनः ॥
प्रेम्णा दृष्टश् च बहुधा आशिषा च प्रयोजितः ॥
विहायैनं ततः पार्थस् त्रिगर्तान् प्रत्ययाद् बली ॥
क्षुधितः क्षुद्विघातार्थं सिंहो मृगगणान् इव ॥
ततो दौर्योधनं सैन्यं मुदा परमया युतम् ॥
गते ऽर्जुने भृशं क्रुद्धं धर्मराजस्य निग्रहे ॥
ततो ऽन्योन्येन ते सेने समाजग्मतुर् ओजसा ॥
गङ्गासरय्वोर् वेगेन प्रावृषीवोल्बणोदके ॥

premṇā dṛṣṭaś ca bahudhā āśiṣā ca prayojitaḥ ||
vihāyainaṃ tataḥ pārthas trigartān pratyayād balī ||
kṣudhitaḥ kṣudvighātārthaṃ siṃho mṛgagaṇān iva ||
tato dauryodhanaṃ sainyaṃ mudā paramayā yutam ||
gate 'rjune bhṛśaṃ kruddhaṃ dharmarājasya nigrahe ||
tato 'nyonyena te sene samājagmatur ojasā ||
gaṅgāsarayvor vegena prāvṛṣīvolbaṇodake ||
Having received the king's leave and been embraced by him, Phalguna [Arjuna], followed again and again by his tender gaze and attended by a parting blessing, then, leaving him [Yudhishthira], the mighty Partha [Arjuna] advanced against the Trigartas, like a hungry lion upon herds of deer to satisfy its hunger. Then Duryodhana's host, filled with the greatest jubilation at Arjuna's departure, exceedingly furious, moved to seize the king of dharma [Yudhishthira]. And then those two hosts clashed with one another with full force, like the Ganga and the Sarayu with their waters violently swollen in the season of downpours.

The parting of brother from brother is drawn with tenderness — an embrace, a blessing, a loving gaze following after: even in the hour of war, love does not fade, and duty is fulfilled not coldly but with the heart. Yet no sooner has Arjuna departed than the enemy rejoices and rushes toward its goal — the plot to part the guardian from the one he guards is now set in motion. The comparison of the armies to rivers swollen by the rains conveys the unstoppable force of the collision. The verse teaches that even amid war the bonds of love, shown in this parting, remain sacred; that evil waits for the guardian's departure to strike at the undefended; and that the clash brought about by treachery and duty is as irresistible as a flood of rivers — yet its outcome lies not in the hand of treachery, but of the higher truth.
