सिंहलाङ्गूललक्ष्माणं पितुर् अर्थे व्यवस्थितम् ॥
प्रवपन्न् इव बीजानि बीजकाले नरर्षभ ॥
द्रौणायनिर् द्रौपदेयं शरवर्षैर् अवाकिरत् ॥

Having spied Prativindhya standing before him in the battle, the son of Drona, upholding his father's honor, held him back with arrows. Prativindhya, enraged, struck back at him with sharp arrows — at him who bore the emblem of a lion's tail, standing firm to the death for his father's cause. As if sowing seeds in the season of sowing, O bull among men, the son of Drona showered Draupadeya with rains of arrows.

Two sons fight 'for their fathers' honor': Ashvatthaman for Drona, Prativindhya for Yudhishthira. Filial love is sacred and mirrored in both, yet it sets them against each other. The image of a sower scattering arrows like seeds in the season of sowing is bitterly ironic: death is sown in place of life. It is telling that fidelity to a father — a virtue — here feeds fratricide. The verse teaches that the noblest feelings, love and reverence for a father, in an unjustly waged war turn into instruments of destruction; that filial duty, holy in itself, does not justify the cause to which it is given; and that the image of sowing turned into a sowing of death reveals the very perversion of nature by war, where man's life-giving labor is put in the service of annihilation.
