संजय उवाच
यन् मां पृच्छसि राजेन्द्र सौभद्रस्य निपातनम् ॥
तत् ते कार्त्स्न्येन वक्ष्यामि शृणु राजन् समाहितः ॥
विक्रीडितं कुमारेण यथानीकं बिभित्सता ॥
दावाग्न्यभिपरीतानां भूरिगुल्मतृणद्रुमे ॥
वनौकसाम् इवारण्ये त्वदीयानाम् अभूद् भयम् ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
yan māṃ pṛcchasi rājendra saubhadrasya nipātanam ||
tat te kārtsnyena vakṣyāmi śṛṇu rājan samāhitaḥ ||
vikrīḍitaṃ kumāreṇa yathānīkaṃ bibhitsatā ||
dāvāgnyabhiparītānāṃ bhūrigulmatṛṇadrume ||
vanaukasām ivāraṇye tvadīyānām abhūd bhayam ||
"Concerning what you ask me, O lord of kings — the death of the son of Subhadra — I shall tell you in full; attend, O king, with care. The fear among your warriors was just like that of forest creatures surrounded by a forest fire, in a forest abundant with bushes, grass and trees."

Sanjaya opens the account of Abhimanyu's death with the image of a forest fire surrounding wild creatures: a single boy struck the whole army with the fear that fire strikes into beasts of a burning forest. Thus the tale of one man's feat against many is set up. It is telling that the fear is felt not by the Pandavas but by 'your' men — the mightier host cowered before the youth. The verse teaches that the valor of one can strike terror into many, turning hunters into hunted creatures; that true strength is measured not by numbers but by the dread it instills; and that the epic opens the story of the boy unlawfully slain not with his weakness but with his terribleness — so that both the young hero's valor and the baseness of those who could overcome him only by ganging up on him might stand out the more clearly.
