स कर्णं कर्णिना कर्णे पीतेन निशितेन च ॥
फाल्गुनिर् द्विषतां मध्ये विव्याध परमेषुणा ॥
पातयित्वा कृपस्याश्वांस् तथोभौ पार्ष्णिसारथी ॥
अथैनं दशभिर् बाणैः प्रत्यविध्यत् स्तनान्तरे ॥
ततो वृन्दारकं वीरं कुरूणां कीर्तिवर्धनम् ॥
पुत्राणां तव वीराणां पश्यताम् अवधीद् बली ॥
sa karṇaṃ karṇinā karṇe pītena niśitena ca ||
phālgunir dviṣatāṃ madhye vivyādha parameṣuṇā ||
pātayitvā kṛpasyāśvāṃs tathobhau pārṣṇisārathī ||
athainaṃ daśabhir bāṇaiḥ pratyavidhyat stanāntare ||
tato vṛndārakaṃ vīraṃ kurūṇāṃ kīrtivardhanam ||
putrāṇāṃ tava vīrāṇāṃ paśyatām avadhīd balī ||
He, the son of Phalguna, in the midst of foes, wounded Karna in the ear with a sharp gilded karni arrow, an excellent shaft. Having struck down Kripa's horses and both flanking charioteers, he then wounded him with ten arrows in the chest. Then the mighty one slew the warrior Vrindaraka, increaser of the Kurus' glory, before the eyes of your warrior sons.

The youth strikes Karna himself ‘in the ear’ in the very midst of his own camp -- a precision that humbles the most fearsome before the eyes of all. And Vrindaraka, ‘who increased the glory of the lineage,’ he slays ‘before the eyes of the sons’: the death of the renowned is witnessed by all, and their grief is inescapable. It is significant that the tradition stresses ‘before the eyes of those looking on’ -- the shame of helplessness and the bitterness of loss become shared by all. The verse teaches that the precision of a true master reaches even the greatest in the very thick of his strength; that a death accomplished before the eyes of loved ones doubles the grief -- to the loss is added helplessness to intervene; and that a single youth, striking down the foremost before the eyes of a whole army, displays a superiority that shames not only the slain but all the powerless witnesses.
