संजय उवाच
विष्णोः स्वसानन्दिकरः स विष्ण्वायुधभूषितः ॥
रराजातिरथः संख्ये जनार्दन इवापरः ॥
मारुतोद्धूतकेशान्तम् उद्यतारिवरायुधम् ॥
वपुः समीक्ष्य पृथ्वीशा दुःसमीक्ष्यं सुरैर् अपि ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
viṣṇoḥ svasānandikaraḥ sa viṣṇvāyudhabhūṣitaḥ ||
rarājātirathaḥ saṃkhye janārdana ivāparaḥ ||
mārutoddhūtakeśāntam udyatārivarāyudham ||
vapuḥ samīkṣya pṛthvīśā duḥsamīkṣyaṃ surair api ||
Bringing joy to his own, adorned with the weapon of Vishnu, he blazed in battle, a great chariot-warrior, like a second Janardana. With locks tossed by the wind, having raised aloft the finest weapon seized from the enemy — this form of his, unbearable to the gaze even of the gods, was beheld by the lords of the earth.

From its very first word the verse lifts the boy's death toward the highest image: "viṣṇvāyudhabhūṣitaḥ", "janārdana iva aparaḥ". The discus Abhimanyu raises is no chance weapon of despair but a sign: in the hour when everything owed to a kshatriya has been stripped from him, a likeness of Vishnu himself, bearing the chakra, seems to descend upon him. It is telling that his form is "unbearable to the gaze even of the gods": a boy dying alone reveals a beauty before which the heavenly host itself pales. Here a law shows itself — that faithfulness to duty carried to the end transfigures the dying into the image of the Lord.
