सर्वशैक्यां चतुष्किष्कुं गुर्वीं रुक्माङ्गदां गदाम् ॥
प्राहिणोत् सूतपुत्राय षडस्राम् अविचारयन् ॥
तया जघानाधिरथेः सदश्वान् साधुवाहिनः ॥
गदया भारतः क्रुद्धो वज्रेणेन्द्र इवासुरान् ॥
ततो भीमो महाबाहुः क्षुराभ्यां भरतर्षभ ॥
ध्वजम् आधिरथेश् छित्त्वा सूतम् अभ्यहनत् तदा ॥
हताश्वसूतम् उत्सृज्य रथं स पतितध्वजम् ॥
विस्फारयन् धनुः कर्णस् तस्थौ भारत दुर्मनाः ॥

prāhiṇot sūtaputrāya ṣaḍasrām avicārayan ||
tayā jaghānādhiratheḥ sadaśvān sādhuvāhinaḥ ||
gadayā bhārataḥ kruddho vajreṇendra ivāsurān ||
tato bhīmo mahābāhuḥ kṣurābhyāṃ bharatarṣabha ||
dhvajam ādhiratheś chittvā sūtam abhyahanat tadā ||
hatāśvasūtam utsṛjya rathaṃ sa patitadhvajam ||
visphārayan dhanuḥ karṇas tasthau bhārata durmanāḥ ||
Bhima hurled at the charioteer's son, without hesitation, a heavy, gold-ringed mace, entirely of steel, six-edged, four cubits long. With it the enraged descendant of Bharata slew the fine horses that drew well the chariot of Adhiratha's son — as Indra slew the asuras with his thunderbolt. Then mighty-armed Bhima, O bull among Bharatas, cut down the banner of Adhiratha's son with two razor-arrows and slew his charioteer. Abandoning the chariot with its horses and charioteer slain and its banner fallen, Karna, stringing his bow, stood, O Bharata, downcast.

Bhima strips away his enemy's supports piece by piece — horses, banner, charioteer — and the formidable Karna is left standing, durmanāḥ, downcast. It is telling that the mace is likened to Indra's thunderbolt striking the asuras: the poet places Bhima once again on the side of heaven's order against the powers of untruth. The verse teaches that a warrior stripped of his supports comes to know the true worth of the cause he stands for; and the dejection of the strong is the first glimmer of the reckoning to come.
