अपि मेरुं वहेत् कश् चित् तरेद् वा मकरालयम् ॥
न तु वृष्णिप्रवीराणां समेत्यान्तं व्रजेन् नृप ॥
एतत् ते सर्वम् आख्यातं यत्र ते संशयो विभो ॥
कुरुराज नरश्रेष्ठ तव ह्य् अपनयो महान् ॥
api meruṃ vahet kaś cit tared vā makarālayam ||
na tu vṛṣṇipravīrāṇāṃ sametyāntaṃ vrajen nṛpa ||
etat te sarvam ākhyātaṃ yatra te saṃśayo vibho ||
kururāja naraśreṣṭha tava hy apanayo mahān ||
"One might even carry Meru, or cross the abode of the makaras [the ocean], but having met the heroes of the Vrishnis in battle, one would not come to their end, o king. All this has been told to you, in answer to what you doubted, o lord. O king of the Kurus, best of men — for indeed your wrongdoing is great."

Sooner could one lift Meru or cross the ocean than overcome the Vrishnis: their invincibility is the very limit of the possible. It is telling that the explanation closes once more with a rebuke: 'great is your wrongdoing' — all calamities trace back to the king's unrighteousness. The verse teaches that there are limits before which all might is powerless, for behind them stands dharma itself; and one who has risen against the righteous, as Dhritarashtra has, is doomed — not by their strength, but by his own wrongdoing, which conscience unceasingly recalls to him through the messenger's voice.
