दुर्योधन उवाच
पश्य मूर्धावसिक्तानाम् आचार्य कदनं कृतम् ॥
कृत्वा प्रमुखतः शूरं भीष्मं मम पितामहम् ॥
तं निहत्य प्रलुब्धो ऽयं शिखण्डी पूर्णमानसः ॥
पाञ्चालैः सहितः सर्वैः सेनाग्रम् अभिकर्षति ॥
अपरश् चापि दुर्धर्षः शिष्यस् ते सव्यसाचिना ॥
अक्षौहिणीः सप्त हत्वा हतो राजा जयद्रथः ॥
duryodhana uvāca
paśya mūrdhāvasiktānām ācārya kadanaṃ kṛtam ||
kṛtvā pramukhataḥ śūraṃ bhīṣmaṃ mama pitāmaham ||
taṃ nihatya pralubdho 'yaṃ śikhaṇḍī pūrṇamānasaḥ ||
pāñcālaiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ senāgram abhikarṣati ||
aparaś cāpi durdharṣaḥ śiṣyas te savyasācinā ||
akṣauhiṇīḥ sapta hatvā hato rājā jayadrathaḥ ||
'Look, teacher, at the slaughter wrought upon the anointed kings. Having placed my grandfather, the hero Bhishma, in the front, and struck him down, this insolent Shikhandin, his desire fulfilled, together with all the Panchalas, rushes toward the head of the army. And your other unconquerable disciple, Savyasachin [Arjuna], having destroyed seven akshauhinis, has slain king Jayadratha.'

Duryodhana bitterly points to "your disciple" — Arjuna, who destroyed seven akshauhinis: within this very phrase a reproach against the teacher is already ripening. It is telling that he calls his enemies "insolent," seeing in their success nothing but impudence. The verse teaches that even in the hour of reckoning, the wrongdoer looks for blame outside himself; and one who has not admitted his own wrong sees in defeat only the enemy's insolence and his own side's negligence, never the fruit of his own deed.
