नकुलं च युधां श्रेष्ठं सर्वयुद्धविशारदम् ॥
शकुनिः सौबलो राजन् वारयाम् आस सत्वरः ॥
शिखण्डिनम् अथायान्तं रथेन रथिनां वरम् ॥
कृपो शारद्वतो राजन् वारयाम् आस संयुगे ॥
प्रतिविन्ध्यम् अथायान्तं मयूरसदृशैर् हयैः ॥
दुःशासनो महाराज यत्तो यत्तम् अवारयत् ॥
भैमसेनिम् अथायान्तं मायाशतविशारदम् ॥
अश्वत्थामा पितुर् मानं कुर्वाणः प्रत्यषेधयत् ॥

śakuniḥ saubalo rājan vārayām āsa satvaraḥ ||
śikhaṇḍinam athāyāntaṃ rathena rathināṃ varam ||
kṛpo śāradvato rājan vārayām āsa saṃyuge ||
prativindhyam athāyāntaṃ mayūrasadṛśair hayaiḥ ||
duḥśāsano mahārāja yatto yattam avārayat ||
bhaimasenim athāyāntaṃ māyāśataviśāradam ||
aśvatthāmā pitur mānaṃ kurvāṇaḥ pratyaṣedhayat ||
And at Nakula, best of fighters, skilled in every kind of battle, Shakuni, son of Subala, O king, hastened to restrain him. Then at the advancing Shikhandin, best of warriors on a chariot, Kripa, son of Sharadvata, O king, restrained him in the clash. Then at the advancing Prativindhya on horses like peacocks, Duhshasana, O great king, standing ready, restrained the one made ready. Then at the advancing son of Bhimasena (Ghatotkacha), skilled in a hundred feats of illusion, Ashvatthaman, rendering honor to his father, repelled him.

The duels multiply, and each champion is given a rival fit for him. It is telling that Ashvatthaman goes into battle "rendering honor to his father": his valor is an offering to Drona, a son's duty turned into a weapon. The verse teaches that a feat grows stronger when done not for oneself but for one beloved: love for a father gives the son strength; and in that reaching out — for another, not for one's own glory — is born a steadfastness that self-love alone could never give.
