संजय उवाच
एवम् उक्त्वा महाबाहुर् हैडिम्बः परवीरहा ॥
अभ्ययात् तुमुले कर्णं तव सैन्यं विभीषयन् ॥
तम् आपतन्तं संक्रुद्धं दीप्तास्यम् इव पन्नगम् ॥
अभ्यस्यन् परमेष्वासः प्रतिजग्राह सूतजः ॥
तयोः समभवद् युद्धं कर्णराक्षसयोर् निशि ॥
गर्जतो राजशार्दूल शक्रप्रह्रादयोर् इव ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
evam uktvā mahābāhur haiḍimbaḥ paravīrahā ||
abhyayāt tumule karṇaṃ tava sainyaṃ vibhīṣayan ||
tam āpatantaṃ saṃkruddhaṃ dīptāsyam iva pannagam ||
abhyasyan parameṣvāsaḥ pratijagrāha sūtajaḥ ||
tayoḥ samabhavad yuddhaṃ karṇarākṣasayor niśi ||
garjato rājaśārdūla śakraprahrādayor iva ||
Having thus spoken, the mighty-armed son of Hidimba, slayer of enemy heroes, rushed amid the tumult upon Karna, terrifying your army. Him, rushing on in fury like a blazing-mouthed serpent, the supreme archer, the son of a suta, received with his own shooting. Between the two there arose a battle, of Karna and the rakshasa, in the night, both roaring, o tiger among kings, as of Shakra and Prahlada.

The chapter closes with the clash of Karna and Ghatotkacha, likened to the battle of Indra with Prahlada: a mortal duel raised to the scale of cosmic struggle. It is telling that Krishna's design begins to unfold here — the rakshasa will force Karna to spend the dart kept in reserve for Arjuna. The verse teaches that within great events a single clash carries a hidden, far-reaching meaning; and what looks like a duel in the night is a link in the design that will save the whole cause of the Pandavas.
