संजय उवाच
तस्मिंस् तथा वर्तमाने कर्णराक्षसयोर् मृधे ॥
अलायुधो राक्षसेन्द्रो वीर्यवान् अभ्यवर्तत ॥
महत्या सेनया युक्तः सुयोधनम् उपागमत् ॥
राक्षसानां विरूपाणां सहस्रैः परिवारितः ॥
नानारूपधरैर् वीरैः पूर्ववैरम् अनुस्मरन् ॥
तस्य ज्ञातिर् हि विक्रान्तो ब्राह्मणादो बको हतः ॥
किर्मीरश् च महातेजा हिडिम्बश् च सखा तथा ॥
स दीर्घकालाध्युषितं पूर्ववैरम् अनुस्मरन् ॥
विज्ञायैतन् निशायुद्धं जिघांसुर् भीमम् आहवे ॥

alāyudho rākṣasendro vīryavān abhyavartata ||
mahatyā senayā yuktaḥ suyodhanam upāgamat ||
rākṣasānāṃ virūpāṇāṃ sahasraiḥ parivāritaḥ ||
nānārūpadharair vīraiḥ pūrvavairam anusmaran ||
tasya jñātir hi vikrānto brāhmaṇādo bako hataḥ ||
kirmīraś ca mahātejā hiḍimbaś ca sakhā tathā ||
sa dīrghakālādhyuṣitaṃ pūrvavairam anusmaran ||
vijñāyaitan niśāyuddhaṃ jighāṃsur bhīmam āhave ||

Alayudha comes driven by a "long-cherished enmity" for kinsmen slain by Bhima. It is telling that this enmity was fed for years — hatred does not fade on its own; it is nurtured in the heart. The verse teaches that harbored resentment is a burden its bearer cherishes to his own ruin; and vengeance nursed for long brings no peace, but only drags the avenger into the same abyss where those he avenges perished.
