"Flee, Kurus, this cannot be overcome: the gods with Indra strike us for the sake of the Pandavas!" Thus for them, the drowning Bharatas, there was no island of refuge there. While that tumultuous outcry stood, with the army of the Kurus broken, dissolving, with the division of the ranks unclear, one could not tell Kurus from others. In the lawless rout, dread of form, we saw all directions empty; and Karna alone there, o king, I saw, cleaving with his chest that rain of weapons. Then he covered the sky with arrows, fighting against the divine sorcery of the rakshasa; modest, doing a difficult, noble deed, the son of the suta did not lose himself in the clash.

Amid the general rout, Karna alone stands, "cleaving the rain of weapons with his chest," "modest" in his feat. It is telling that the word used is hrimān — modest: the greatest valor here is free of boasting. The verse teaches that true heroism is quiet: it performs the difficult "noble deed" without display, standing while all others flee; and the solitary steadfastness of a modest man amid panic shines brighter than any clamor — for courage needs no witness to be itself.
