Terrified by his roar, your warriors fled in the battle, casting off the kshatriya's dharma, given over to flight. The Pandavas, having gained victory, rejoiced, O lord of the people; and by the destruction of the enemy in the battle they obtained happiness. Then, when Drona was slain, O king, the Kurus, oppressed by weapons, with their heroes slain, shattered, gave themselves deeply to grief.

One camp rejoices, the other lies in the dust of grief -- yet both are carried by the same wave of consequence from the fallen leader. It is telling that the Pandavas' joy is measured by "the enemy's destruction": happiness built on another's death is by its nature unstable. The verse teaches that in the turning wheel of victory and defeat there is no firm ground for the heart; the one who exults today may weep tomorrow -- and so the wise seek not triumph over others but a peace that does not depend on the outcome of battles.
