तच् छ्रुत्वा विमनास् तत्र आचार्यो महद् अप्रियम् ॥
नियम्य दिव्यान्य् अस्त्राणि नायुध्यत यथा पुरा ॥
तं दृष्ट्वा परमोद्विग्नं शोकोपहतचेतसम् ॥
पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतः क्रूरकर्मा समाद्रवत् ॥
तं दृष्ट्वा विहितं मृत्युं लोकतत्त्वविचक्षणः ॥
दिव्यान्य् अस्त्राण्य् अथोत्सृज्य रणे प्राय उपाविशत् ॥
tac chrutvā vimanās tatra ācāryo mahad apriyam ||
niyamya divyāny astrāṇi nāyudhyata yathā purā ||
taṃ dṛṣṭvā paramodvignaṃ śokopahatacetasam ||
pāñcālarājasya sutaḥ krūrakarmā samādravat ||
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vihitaṃ mṛtyuṃ lokatattvavicakṣaṇaḥ ||
divyāny astrāṇy athotsṛjya raṇe prāya upāviśat ||
"Hearing this, the Acharya grew sorrowful there with great distress; restraining his divine weapons, he did not fight as before. Seeing him greatly agitated, his mind stricken with grief, the son of the king of Panchala [Dhrishtadyumna], cruel in deed, rushed at him. Seeing his appointed death, he [Drona] who perceives the truth of the worlds, casting aside his divine weapons, sat down in the battle in the fast unto death [prayopavesha]."

It was not an arrow that struck down Drona, but grief for his son: having lost that for which he bore arms, "he who knows the essence of the worlds" himself lays down his weapons and sits in prayopavesha. It is telling that he meets his "destined death" not with resistance but with concentration: seeing what is foreordained, the wise man accepts it. The verse teaches that attachment -- even the noblest, a father's love for his son -- is the very thread by which Time draws us onward; and true greatness lies not in escaping death but in meeting it turned toward the Highest.
