किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं कार्यं यद् इदम् उद्यतम् ॥
सुमहत् पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् आयान्त्य् एते हि कौरवाः ॥
अथ वा फल्गुनः सर्वान् वारयिष्यति संयुगे ॥
अहम् अप्य् अस्य मूर्धानं पातयिष्यामि सायकैः ॥
मन्यते छिन्नबाहुं मां भूरिश्रवसम् आहवे ॥
उत्सृजैनम् अहं वैनम् एष मां वा हनिष्यति ॥

"What indeed can I do -- the task that now confronts, so vast, for the sons of Pandu? For these Kauravas are advancing. Or else Phalguna [Arjuna] will hold them all back in battle; and I too shall bring down his [Satyaki's] head with arrows. He thinks of me as one with a severed arm, like Bhurishravas in battle; let him go -- whether I slay him, or he slays me."

Dhrishtadyumna, even while goading, briefly recognizes the essential thing: "the Kauravas are advancing" -- the enemy is near, while they quarrel among themselves. What stands out is this split -- clear reason sees the danger, yet wounded pride rushes toward a duel with one of its own. The verse teaches that discord among allies is especially mad before a common foe; and one who, in the hour of invasion, seeks to settle scores with his own plays into the enemy's hand, forgetting why the camp was gathered.
