कृष्णस्य संनिधौ रामः सहितः कृतवर्मणा ॥
अपिबद् युयुधानश् च गदो बभ्रुस् तथैव च ॥
ततः परिषदो मध्ये युयुधानो मदोत्कटः ॥
अब्रवीत् कृतवर्माणम् अवहस्यावमन्य च ॥
कः क्षत्रियो मन्यमानः सुप्तान् हन्यान् मृतान् इव ॥
न तन् मृष्यन्ति हार्दिक्य यादवा यत् त्वया कृतम् ॥
इत्य् उक्ते युयुधानेन पूजयाम् आस तद् वचः ॥
प्रद्युम्नो रथिनां श्रेष्ठो हार्दिक्यम् अवमन्य च ॥
kṛṣṇasya saṃnidhau rāmaḥ sahitaḥ kṛtavarmaṇā ||
apibad yuyudhānaś ca gado babhrus tathaiva ca ||
tataḥ pariṣado madhye yuyudhāno madotkaṭaḥ ||
abravīt kṛtavarmāṇam avahasyāvamanya ca ||
kaḥ kṣatriyo manyamānaḥ suptān hanyān mṛtān iva ||
na tan mṛṣyanti hārdikya yādavā yat tvayā kṛtam ||
ity ukte yuyudhānena pūjayām āsa tad vacaḥ ||
pradyumno rathināṃ śreṣṭho hārdikyam avamanya ca ||
Beside Krishna, Rāma drank together with Kṛtavarmā, and Yuyudhāna, Gada, and Babhru as well. Then, in the midst of the assembly, the intoxicated Yuyudhāna spoke to Kṛtavarmā with mockery and contempt: "What kṣatriya worthy of the name would slay the sleeping as if they were dead? The Yādavas do not forgive what you have done, O Hārdikya." When Yuyudhāna had so spoken, Pradyumna, foremost among chariot-warriors, approved those words and likewise scorned Hārdikya.

Intoxication loosens old enmity: the drunken Sātyaki reproaches Kṛtavarmā for the night slaughter of the sleeping Pāṇḍava camp — a crime the Yādavas do not forgive. Wine, clouding the mind, dredges a long-buried grievance from the depths of the heart and turns the feast into a quarrel. The reproach itself is just — Kṛtavarmā is truly guilty of that outrage — yet when uttered in drunken pride it sows not truth but destruction. Wine awakens hidden enmity and turns even a righteous indictment into an instrument of strife; a rebuke delivered not for the sake of truth but in intoxicated malice does not correct evil but multiplies it, kindling the fire of fratricidal conflict.
