तत उत्थाय सक्रोधः सात्यकिर् वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥
पञ्चानां द्रौपदेयानां धृष्टद्युम्नशिखण्डिनोः ॥
एष गच्छामि पदवीं सत्येन च तथा शपे ॥
सौप्तिके ये च निहताः सुप्तानेन दुरात्मना ॥
द्रोणपुत्रसहायेन पापेन कृतवर्मणा ॥
समाप्तम् आयुर् अस्याद्य यशश् चापि सुमध्यमे ॥
इतीदम् उक्त्वा खड्गेन केशवस्य समीपतः ॥
अभिद्रुत्य शिरः क्रुद्धश् चिच्छेद कृतवर्मणः ॥
tata utthāya sakrodhaḥ sātyakir vākyam abravīt ||
pañcānāṃ draupadeyānāṃ dhṛṣṭadyumnaśikhaṇḍinoḥ ||
eṣa gacchāmi padavīṃ satyena ca tathā śape ||
sauptike ye ca nihatāḥ suptānena durātmanā ||
droṇaputrasahāyena pāpena kṛtavarmaṇā ||
samāptam āyur asyādya yaśaś cāpi sumadhyame ||
itīdam uktvā khaḍgena keśavasya samīpataḥ ||
abhidrutya śiraḥ kruddhaś ciccheda kṛtavarmaṇaḥ ||
Then Sātyaki rose in wrath and declared: "Behold, I shall follow the path of the five sons of Draupadī, of Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Śikhaṇḍin — and by truth I so swear — who were slain while sleeping in the night by this villain, the wicked Kṛtavarmā, acting in concert with the son of Droṇa. His life is ended this very day, and his fame as well, O slender-waisted one." Having said thus, wrathful, he rushed forward close to Keśava and with his sword severed the head of Kṛtavarmā.

Sātyaki turns reproach into bloodshed: recalling the sons of Draupadī and Dhṛṣṭadyumna slain in their sleep, he avenges himself on Kṛtavarmā on the spot, severing his head in the very presence of Krishna. Thus anger, left unchecked in time, passes from words to murder, and the feast becomes a slaughter. Vengeance for an old crime itself becomes a new crime, for it is committed in intoxication and fury rather than by judgment. An unredressed grievance, stirred up by wine and wrath, bursts into bloodshed, and revenge only continues the chain of evil; killing carried out even for a previous crime, but in unrestrained rage, is not justice but another link in that same fatal enmity in which the guilty and the innocent alike are swept away.
