वैशंपायन उवाच
दारुको ऽपि कुरून् गत्वा दृष्ट्वा पार्थान् महारथान् ॥
आचष्ट मौसले वृष्णीन् अन्योन्येनोपसंहृतान् ॥
श्रुत्वा विनष्टान् वार्ष्णेयान् सभोजकुकुरान्धकान् ॥
पाण्डवाः शोकसंतप्ता वित्रस्तमनसो ऽभवन् ॥
ततो ऽर्जुनस् तान् आमन्त्र्य केशवस्य प्रियः सखा ॥
प्रययौ मातुलं द्रष्टुं नेदम् अस्तीति चाब्रवीत् ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
dāruko 'pi kurūn gatvā dṛṣṭvā pārthān mahārathān ||
ācaṣṭa mausale vṛṣṇīn anyonyenopasaṃhṛtān ||
śrutvā vinaṣṭān vārṣṇeyān sabhojakukurāndhakān ||
pāṇḍavāḥ śokasaṃtaptā vitrastamanaso 'bhavan ||
tato 'rjunas tān āmantrya keśavasya priyaḥ sakhā ||
prayayau mātulaṃ draṣṭuṃ nedam astīti cābravīt ||
Vaiśampāyana said: And Dāruka, having come to the Kurus and seen the Pārthas, those great warriors, told of the Vrishnis who had slaughtered one another in the mace battle. Hearing of the destruction of the Vārshneyās together with the Bhojas, Kukuras, and Andhakas, the Pāndavas, consumed by grief, became shattered in mind. Then Arjuna, the dear friend of Keśava, having taken leave of them, set out to see his maternal uncle, saying: 'All of this is no more.'

The news of the Yādavas' destruction shakes even the unbreakable Pāndavas: the loss of Kṛṣṇa's clan reverberates in them as grief. Arjuna, 'the dear friend of Keśava,' hastens at once toward Dvārakā — love does not tarry when calamity has struck those who are dear. The words 'all of this is no more' are the heart's first groan, not yet able to contain the magnitude of the loss. Even the greatest heroes are not stone before the sorrow of those close to them. The verse teaches that devotion to the Lord and love for His clan make another's calamity one's own, compelling immediate aid; and that a heart bound by ties of friendship and love is shaken by the loss of the beloved no less than by its own, for true attachment knows no division between one's own grief and the grief of those one loves.
