स वृष्णिनिलयं गत्वा दारुकेण सह प्रभो ॥
ददर्श द्वारकां वीरो मृतनाथाम् इव स्त्रियम् ॥
याः स्म ता लोकनाथेन नाथवत्यः पुराभवन् ॥
तास् त्व् अनाथास् तदा नाथं पार्थं दृष्ट्वा विचुक्रुशुः ॥
षोडशस्त्रीसहस्राणि वासुदेवपरिग्रहः ॥
तासाम् आसीन् महान् नादो दृष्ट्वैवार्जुनम् आगतम् ॥
तास् तु दृष्ट्वैव कौरव्यो बाष्पेण पिहितो ऽर्जुनः ॥
हीनाः कृष्णेन पुत्रैश् च नाशकत् सो ऽभिवीक्षितुम् ॥

ṣoḍaśastrīsahasrāṇi vāsudevaparigrahaḥ ||
tāsām āsīn mahān nādaḥ dṛṣṭvaivārjunam āgatam ||
tās tu dṛṣṭvaiva kauravyo bāṣpeṇa pihito 'rjunaḥ ||
hīnāḥ kṛṣṇena putraiś ca nāśakat so 'bhivīkṣitum ||
He, arriving at the abode of the Vrishnis together with Dāruka, O lord, that hero beheld Dvārakā like a woman whose husband has died. Those who had formerly a protector in the lord of the world were now unprotected; and seeing Pārtha as their protector, they cried out. Sixteen thousand wives, the consorts of Vāsudeva — a great cry arose among them the moment they saw Arjuna arrive. And the Kaurava Arjuna, upon seeing them, veiled in tears, could not look upon those bereft of Kṛṣṇa and their sons.

Dvārakā, widowed without her Lord, and sixteen thousand queens bereft of their protector, reveal what the Lord's nearness meant to them: He alone was their nātha — their support and refuge — and without Him the entire city was left orphaned. This discloses that the true protection of all existence rests in the Lord, and without Him even the greatest well-being becomes widowhood. Even Arjuna, that mighty hero, 'could not look' upon this grief. The verse teaches that the Lord is the sole true guardian of all souls, and without Him every shelter is illusory and possession turns to orphanhood; that separation from Him plunges even the strongest into inconsolable anguish, for there is no other foundation, and one deprived of Him loses the very basis of his life.
