सः ईक्षत कथम् नु इदम् मत् ऋते स्यात् इति सः ईक्षत कतरेण प्रपद्यै इति सः ईक्षत यदि वाचा अभिव्याहृतम् यदि प्राणेन अभिप्राणितम् यदि चक्षुषा दृष्टम् यदि श्रोत्रेण श्रुतम् यदि त्वचा स्पृष्टम् यदि मनसा ध्यातम् यदि अपानेन अभ्यपानितम् यदि शिश्नेन विसृष्टम् अथ कः अहम् इति
saḥ īkṣata katham nu idam mat ṛte syāt iti saḥ īkṣata katareṇa prapadyai iti saḥ īkṣata yadi vācā abhivyāhṛtam yadi prāṇena abhiprāṇitam yadi cakṣuṣā dṛṣṭam yadi śrotreṇa śrutam yadi tvacā spṛṣṭam yadi manasā dhyātam yadi apānena abhyapānitam yadi śiśnena visṛṣṭam atha kaḥ aham iti
He beheld: "How could this be without Me?" He beheld: "By which [way] shall I enter?" He beheld: "If speech utters, if breath inhales, if the eye sees, if hearing hears, if the skin feels, if the mind thinks, if the apāna swallows, if the generative organ emits — then who am I?"

The body is assembled, the gods are installed, the food is assimilated — the machine of life is working. And then the Creator asks the question that blows the whole picture open: kathaṁ nv idaṁ mad ṛte syāt — "how could this be without Me?" And a second: katareṇa prapadyā iti — "by which [way] shall I enter?"
The third beholding is an inventory of filled vacancies: speech speaks, the prāṇa breathes, the eye sees, the mind thinks, the apāna swallows, the seed emits… atha ko 'ham iti — "then who am I?" The question of questions, put by the Creator Himself: if all the functions are assigned, where is the place of the Owner of functions? Modern science of man stands exactly here: having described all the processes, it asks — is anyone else needed? The Aitareya answers with the Creator's question: without Me — how? The mechanism is complete — but for whom is all this? Who will say "I see" when it is the eye that sees?
Note: "who am I?" here is not the bewilderment of a creature but the Creator's decision to enter personally: a world of functions without Him is a theatre without a spectator, an orchestra without a listener. The next verse will name the door by which He entered — and man will become the one being in whom this question lives: "who am I?" — an ancestral memory of the One who came in.
