The second chapter begins, and it is a litany: a long recitation of names, interspersed with syllables. Note the first of them, for it is, to my mind, the finest in the whole book: smaraṇa-mātra-santuṣṭāya, “content with mere remembrance.” Smaraṇa-mātra means “by remembrance alone”: not by sacrifice, not by austerity, not by giving — by having been remembered.
This definition is basic in Vaiṣṇava practice, and is constantly said of the Lord; and that the name acts even in one who utters it unwittingly was discussed reading the Hayagrīva (2.p2). It is worth noting, however, the measure of this phrase: it says santuṣṭa, “content,” not “bought.” That is, remembrance is not a price; it is that with which He is pleased; and the difference between “He gives for this” and “this pleases Him” is, to my mind, the whole difference between a transaction and a relationship.
Let us add the second name: mahā-bhaya-nivāraṇa, “remover of great fear.” Mahā-bhaya is, in this literature, the usual name for death; and that fear comes from a second, and that fearlessness is attained either by removing the other or by trusting him, was discussed reading the Varāha (4.17). Let us add, too, that a mother is named in the list: anasūyā-ānanda-vardhana, “increaser of the joy of Anasūyā.”
This detail is warm and deserves note: God is remembered as someone's joy; and no definitions of this kind occur in abstract literature.
