«He is freed from sins beginning with the killing of a brāhmaṇa; he is freed from sins beginning with the killing of a cow; by gifts such as "the man on the scale" he becomes purified from sins; he is freed from sin without remainder; he is freed from the sins of the edible and the inedible».

A list of purifications, the same as we examined reading the Varāha (5.p) and the Hayagrīva (2.p6); let us briefly repeat the caveat, for it is obligatory. Read literally and taken in advance, such a promise becomes a license; and the Bhāgavatam's caveat (6.2.10) about one who sins nāmno balāt, “on the strength of the name,” is the only defense against such a reading. Let us add what in this list deserves separate examination: tulā-puruṣa-ādi-dānaiḥ, “by gifts such as ‘the man on the scale.’”
Tulā-puruṣa is a rite in which the giver sat on a scale, and gold was placed on the other pan, all of it to be distributed. This rite was performed by kings, and it is a model of the costliest possible gift: a person gives as much as he himself weighs. That is, reading this book is equated to what only one king in a thousand could afford.
The sense of such an equation is understandable and, to my mind, kindly: the poor are told they are not left behind. The Vaiṣṇava side holds this as its constant argument; and its verse, cited reading the Varāha (5.10), states that in Kali there is one great virtue: kīrtanād eva kṛṣṇasya mukta-saṅgaḥ paraṃ vrajet — by singing alone. That is, an age lacking the means for rites also lacks the need for them; and this is not a leniency, but a change in what is measured.
