The kara-nyāsa, “placement upon the hand,” is given: names are applied to the fingers, and with each, finger touches finger. The rite of nyāsa was discussed reading the Dattātreya (1.7); let us only repeat that it is the marking-out of oneself with a name. Note that here it is the hand that is marked, not the body; and this is no accident.
In charms against snakebite, the hand is the instrument: with it one passes over the wound, binds it, touches it; and hence it is armed first of all. Let us add the list of names, for it gives Garuḍa's form in five words. Pakṣi-indra — “king of birds.”
Viṣṇu-vallabha — “dear to Viṣṇu,” literally “beloved, desired.” Trailokya-paripūjita — “honored by the three worlds.” Ugra-bhayaṅkara-kālānala-rūpa — “having the form of the fierce and terrible fire of time.”
Note how ill this last name fits the others: he who is called “beloved” is also called “the fire of the world's end.” This combination is common in Indian usage, and to my mind meaningful: fearsome to the one being warded off, and dear to the one being protected. The Vaiṣṇava side holds this as a rule: one and the same person appears fearsome or gentle depending on the position of the one who beholds him; and of Nṛsiṃha, terrible to Hiraṇyakaśipu and gentle to Prahlāda, it was discussed reading the Nṛsiṃha-tāpanī.
