तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन गोपनीयं विजानता । यत्रास्ते च गुरुर्ब्रह्मन्दिव्ययोगप्रदायकः

The requirement of concealment is repeated and intensified: sarva-prayatnena, "with every effort." This repetition shows how important it is to the author; and it deserves examining why such traditions cling so to secrecy. There are, it seems, three reasons, and they are of unequal worth.
The first is sound: techniques are dangerous, and open access harms the unready. Here concealment is a precaution, and there is nothing to object to. The second is caste-bound: knowledge is a possession, and passing it to a stranger diminishes the standing of a lineage or a school. Here concealment is the guarding of property, and there is nothing to approve in it.
The third is profitable: the secret is prized more dearly than the open, and the keeper of the secret has power over the one who craves it. It is unpleasant to speak of this, but the history of these traditions is full of examples of it, and it would be dishonest to stay silent. One can tell which reason is at work in a given case by a simple mark: what exactly is concealed. Whether what could cause harm is concealed — or what one cannot be saved without.
The Vaishnava side distinguishes by exactly this mark; and so in her practice the techniques of contemplation are concealed, but not the means of salvation. The means is proclaimed in the square: the Name, to everyone, and free.
