सूत उवाच
एतस्मिन्न् एव काले तु भगिन्यौ ते तपोधन ॥
अपश्यतां समायान्तम् उच्चैःश्रवसम् अन्तिकात् ॥
यं तं देवगणाः सर्वे हृष्टरूपा अपूजयन् ॥
मथ्यमाने ऽमृते जातम् अश्वरत्नम् अनुत्तमम् ॥
महौघबलम् अश्वानाम् उत्तमं जवतां वरम् ॥
श्रीमन्तम् अजरं दिव्यं सर्वलक्षणलक्षितम् ॥
शौनक उवाच
कथं तद् अमृतं देवैर् मथितं क्व च शंस मे ॥
यत्र जज्ञे महावीर्यः सो ऽश्वराजो महाद्युतिः ॥

mahaughabalam aśvānām uttamaṃ javatāṃ varam ||
śrīmantam ajaraṃ divyaṃ sarvalakṣaṇalakṣitam ||
śaunaka uvāca
kathaṃ tad amṛtaṃ devair mathitaṃ kva ca śaṃsa me ||
yatra jajñe mahāvīryaḥ so 'śvarājo mahādyutiḥ ||
Suta said: "At that very time, O rich in austerity, the two sisters saw approaching not far off Uccaihshravas -- that horse whom all the hosts of gods joyfully honored, the incomparable jewel-horse born at the churning of amrita (the nectar of immortality): the best of horses, foremost of the swift, [filled] with the strength of a mighty torrent, glorious, unaging, divine, marked with all [auspicious] signs." Shaunaka said: "How and where did the gods churn that amrita? Tell me [of the place] where that resplendent, greatly valorous king of horses was born."

The appearance of Uccaihshravas, the divine horse born from the ocean at the churning of amrita, opens one of the greatest of narratives -- the samudra-manthana. It is significant that the sight of this horse becomes the occasion for the sisters' quarrel, which will lead Vinata into bondage and Garuda to his great feat. Thus the small (a dispute over a horse's coloring) is woven together with the great (the gods' churning of the ocean). In the churning of the ocean itself an image of spiritual effort is disclosed: to obtain the nectar of immortality (amrita) one must "churn" -- apply persistent labor -- and this is accomplished only under the guidance of the Lord (Narayana), as what follows will reveal. Shaunaka's eagerness to hear of the origin of amrita is the thirst for hari-katha, the very hearing of which, as already said, bestows long life. The precious horse, appearing "not far off," invisibly links earthly events to the Lord's cosmic play.
