Here the deeper meaning of the samudra-manthana is disclosed. It is significant that the very undertaking is conceived and directed by Narayana -- the Lord Vishnu Himself: the gods deliberate, but the plan and decision come from Him. Thus scripture affirms that every great good is attained only by the will and under the guidance of the Lord; without Him the efforts of the gods are fruitless. Deep too is the image of the alliance of gods and asuras: for a common goal even adversaries join their efforts -- yet the fruit, as will become known, is claimed in the end by those devoted to the Lord, for He, who directs the labor, also allots its fruits. Mount Meru, "unassailable by those steeped in unrighteousness," signifies that only the pure in heart may partake of the highest. In the churning of the ocean a teaching is given: the nectar of immortality (liberation, love of God) is won through joint, persistent effort under the Lord's direction, not alone and not by one's own will. Narayana Himself, conceiving the good of all, reveals His boundless compassion and supreme lordship over creation.
