The churning of the ocean begins with a lesson about the limits of one's own strength and the need for higher help. The gods, for all their might, cannot even move Mount Mandara — the churning-rod. Only by turning to Vishnu and Brahma do they gain wisdom and strength; and it is Ananta-Shesha — the Lord's eternal servant, upon whom Narayana Himself rests — who lifts the mountain. Thus scripture shows: every great undertaking begins not with self-reliance but with a humble appeal to the Lord and His representatives. In Ananta the image of the boundless power of devotional service is revealed: what all the gods together cannot manage, one servant of the Lord, acting at His word, accomplishes with ease. The mountain itself, "sinking beneath the earth as far as it rises above," reminds us that the visible is only half of the whole, and that the support of all existence lies hidden in the unseen — in the Lord.
