महा-द्रुमाणां निर्यासाः ओषधि-रसाः सागर-अम्भसि सुस्रुवुःmahā-drumāṇāṃ niryāsāḥ oṣadhi-rasāḥ sāgara-ambhasi susruvuḥthe saps of great trees and herbal juices flowed into the waters of the ocean

देवाः ब्रह्माणं अब्रुवन् श्रान्ताः स्म न उद्भवति अमृतंdevāḥ brahmāṇaṃ abruvan śrāntāḥ sma na udbhavati amṛtaṃthe gods said to Brahma: we are exhausted, the amrita is not appearing
ऋते नारायणं दैत्याः नाग-उत्तमाः चṛte nārāyaṇaṃ daityāḥ nāga-uttamāḥ ca[all are exhausted] except Narayana — both the daityas and the best of the serpents
ब्रह्मा नारायणं अब्रवीत् विधत्स्व एषां बलंbrahmā nārāyaṇaṃ abravīt vidhatsva eṣāṃ balaṃBrahma said to Narayana: grant them strength
भवान् अत्र परायणम्bhavān atra parāyaṇamyou are the [one] refuge here
विष्णुः बलं ददामि सर्वेषां कर्म ये समास्थिताःviṣṇuḥ balaṃ dadāmi sarveṣāṃ karma ye samāsthitāḥVishnu: I give strength to all who have undertaken this task

The heart of this chapter is the source of strength. All the laborers grow exhausted, "except Narayana": the Lord is untiring, for He is the source of all strength, while all others draw their power from Him. When the exhausted gods cry out, Brahma points to the one refuge — Vishnu: "bhavān atra parāyaṇam" — "You are the refuge here." And the Lord grants strength to all who labor in [His] work. Here, briefly and clearly, is the essence of the path of devotion: one's own strength is not enough to attain immortality, but the Lord endows with strength those who, without giving up, continue the effort, surrendered to Him. This passage is especially significant: Narayana is parāyaṇa, the final refuge of all; remembrance of Him restores vigor to the weary soul. It is notable that the transformation of the waters (into milk, then into ghee) precedes the strength from above — labor purifies, but only the Lord's grace brings it to completion. Thus the undertaking, which had nearly halted from exhaustion, is revived by the power of Vishnu.
