Here the Lord's supreme justice is revealed, along with the futility of deceit. Rahu, the impious danava, tries by cunning to steal immortality, slipping into the ranks of the gods under a borrowed form — but nothing can be hidden from the Lord: the Sun and the Moon, all-seeing, expose him at once. Thus scripture teaches that the spiritual (amrita, immortality) cannot be obtained through deceit and pretense; before the Lord every disguise is powerless. It is significant that the amrita, having reached only Rahu's throat, makes immortal only his head — and so, in revenge, he eternally swallows the Sun and the Moon (hence eclipses), yet they always emerge unharmed. Thus evil may eclipse the light for a time, but cannot swallow it forever. Herein lies an image of the eternal: darkness (impiety) hurls itself at the luminaries, but the Lord preserves the light, and the eclipse always passes. Rahu's counterfeit righteousness, punished by the Lord Himself, is a warning to all who dress themselves in the garments of holiness for the sake of gain.
