The conclusion of the tale of the churning reveals the triumph of dharma and order. The asuras, unable to withstand Sudarshana, flee into the earth and the ocean — evil is not destroyed altogether but driven back within its own bounds, for in the world of duality darkness retreats but does not vanish entirely. It is significant that Mandara is carefully returned to its place and the clouds depart 'as they had come': after the great deed cosmic order is restored, everything returns to balance — such is the rhythm of the Lord's play. The amrita, meanwhile, is safely concealed and entrusted to safekeeping — the supreme good is entrusted to the worthy and kept guarded. Here is the final lesson of the whole tale: the nectar of immortality is won through joint effort, but obtained only by the mercy of the Lord (Narayana, Mohini, Sudarshana), and it goes to the devoted, not to the impious. Thus the churning of the ocean, which began with the gods' weakness, ends in their victory and joy — but only because the Lord Himself was at the foundation of it all.
