Suta said: "Then Vasuki spoke this word to the sage Jaratkaru: 'This maiden, my sister, endowed with austerity, bears the same name as you; accept her, best of the twice-born, as your wife. I myself will support your wife and, with all my strength, O rich in austerity, provide for her protection.' When the naga had promised, 'I will support my sister,' Jaratkaru then went to the serpent's dwelling. There the foremost of those versed in mantras, seasoned by austerity, [steadfast] in his great vow, righteous of soul, took her hand according to rite and with mantras. Then, taking his wife, he went to the bright bedchamber, worthy of and approved by the king of serpents, praised by the great sages. There a bed had been prepared, spread with a precious covering, and there Jaratkaru dwelt with his wife. And there the righteous sage made a pact with his wife: 'You must never do or say anything displeasing to me. Should you do what is displeasing, I will abandon you and my dwelling in your house. Accept this word that I have spoken.' Then the sister of the king of serpents, deeply troubled, in great sorrow said: 'So be it.' And thus she, renowned, attended her difficult-natured husband with stratagems, [wary] as a white crow, wishing to please him. [Then], at the fertile season, having bathed, Vasuki's sister duly approached her husband, the great sage. And in her a fetus was conceived, resembling fire, filled with great austerity, blazing like Vaishvanara (Agni); and it grew as the moon grows in the bright half of the month."
