Here the resolution is accomplished — at the decisive moment, Astika asks for a single boon: that the sacrifice cease. His resolve is telling: the king offers gold, silver, cattle — everything except calling off the rite — yet Astika does not swerve from his one aim. Here is the purity of righteous petition: he seeks not gain for himself but the deliverance of others — ‘for the welfare of our mother’s kin’; in this lies the selflessness of the true intercessor. Notice the clash of two wills: the king’s wrath, clinging to vengeance, and the brahmin’s mercy, steadfast in compassion; and the matter is decided not by force but by righteousness, upheld by the assembly of sages. It is telling that the very knowers of the Veda urge the king to yield: the voice of dharma, speaking through the assembly, prevails over the voice of wrath. Thus the scripture shows that a given word (the king had promised ‘even the ungivable’) and a righteous one’s intercession are stronger than the thirst for revenge; and mercy, having awaited its hour, stays the raised hand of violence — not through opposition, but through fidelity to a given vow and through compassion.
